Solon High School

Monthly Update-September 2021

Off and Running

Good Morning High School Families,

With nearly two weeks under our belt, I can say this has been one of the best starts to a school year that I have ever encountered as an educator. Our students and staff have been amazing, and we are well on our way to setting the tone for the year. We are starting to figure out our new schedule, and tweaks have continued to be made to ensure a positive experience for all. Continue to check the Big Board for any big assessments/projects, and reach out to any of your child's teachers if you have questions that pertain to their learning. Thanks again for all of the support! Enjoy the second half of your week, Zach

Don't forget that you can visit our WEBSITE for all things Solon High School. Both Dawn and Arran are in the office Monday-Friday from 7:30-4:00. Thanks!

Meet our new College and Career Transition Coordinator: Kathleen McKean

Hi, I’m the new College and Career Transition Coordinator for Solon High School! This is a new partnership between Kirkwood Community College and the Solon Community School District. I am excited to start working with students in many aspects of postsecondary planning. I will assist with concurrent enrollment in Kirkwood, job shadows, internships, college visits, FAFSA completion, college applications, exploring apprenticeships and anything related to postsecondary interests the students have. I will also be following up with students after graduation to make sure they are on track with their postsecondary plans. I will be placing an emphasis on the underrepresented population at Solon, those students who may be struggling to make a decision and need extra guidance and support.

A little about me - I have lived in Johnson County most of my life and currently live with my husband and 2 boys in North Liberty. Simon is 5 and in the Kindergarten program at Tamarack Discovery School and Oliver is 6 and in first grade at Christine Grant Elementary in North Liberty. I graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Psychology. Most of my career I worked for Kirkwood in the Creating Futures program. I enjoyed working with low income youth facing multiple barriers to success in education and employment. I love helping students accomplish their goals and plan for their future.

FINANCIAL AID PLANNING INFORMATION

For students planning on attending college in fall 2022, the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) opens on October 1, 2021. The FAFSA is the financial aid form for accessing grants, federal student loans and work-study funds. By completing the FAFSA form, students can make sure that they are taking advantage of the best student loan options. Many students choose not to apply for FAFSA because they think that federal college aid is only available for those less fortunate than they are. Students and families, even if you do not believe you will qualify for any federal student aid programs, college financial aid personnel recommend you complete the FAFSA.

If you are nervous about completing the FAFSA or have specific questions I highly encourage you to contact our Iowa College Access Network (ICAN) Representative, Lupe Hernandez. She has an office at the Kirkwood Regional Center in Coralville.

ICAN can provide assistance with the FAFSA this fall. Appointments are free and their schedule fills up fast. To schedule a one-on-one appointment with ICAN visit www.icansucceed.org/apt Due to the ongoing pandemic, ICAN is only doing virtual appointments using Zoom technology.

For reference, here is Lupe's contact info:

More detailed information about Financial Aid can be found on the Financial Aid Information page of the Solon HS Counseling website.
