It's May...must be Field Trip Mania
Let's be honest, it is! If you contacted Transportation you would discover trip after trip district wide. It might only be one for you, but in all likelihood your families are participating in multiple trips.
During my classroom days our students took a trip each Spring. The day was educational and enjoyable at the same time. However, that isn't why I'm sharing. As a teacher I didn't fully realize how important my actions were on field trips until several years into my career.
The story actually took place several weeks after the Field Trip occurred. It was a typical day, nothing special. My students had just gone to lunch and I went down to grab my mail and refill my water bottle. My small stack of mail didn't get my attention. I returned to my room and placed it on my desk. Hours later as I cleaned things up I went back to the stack of mail. Most of it was junk, but to my surprise I had received a letter. I've always enjoyed receiving "snail" mail and as I opened up the letter I was unsure of what to expect.
To my delight it was from a grandparent that had chaperoned our Sauder Village trip. The letter was very complimentary, but what I remember most was the line, "You invested in all of your kids!" My M-O on field trips was to always take the one or two students that didn't have a chaperone and I knew needed to be with me. Sometimes I had the good fortune of nearly all students having a chaperone, but that was not normal. During field trips I participated just like a student. I wanted to be able to see what my students saw. I also took every opportunity to check in with families. This is what the grandparent noticed most.
I share that story not to pat myself on the back, I share because when we as educators take our students on field trips our actions and interactions are noticed. Just last week I had multiple parents approach me at Field Day and applaud our very own Nicole Kelly. What families noticed was her care, investment, and never-ending energy!
Ultimately, think of this as a reminder that our actions are always being observed. That isn't intended to create anxiety, it is intended to add awareness.
