Matthew Quick (born 1976) is an American author of young adult and fiction novels. His debut novel, The Silver Linings Playbook, was adapted into a movie, starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, with Robert De Niro Jackie Weaver and Chris Tucker.Quick was finalist for a 2009 PEN/Hemingway Award,and his work has been translated into several languages. In 2012, his young-adult novel, Boy 21, was reviewed favorably by The New York Times.Quick is a finalist for the TIME 100 most influential people of 2013.Quick grew up in Oaklyn, New Jersey and graduated from Collingswood High School. He has a degree in English literature from La Salle University and an MFA from Goddard College.

Plot/Plot structure

Plot:Amber Appleton lives in a bus. Ever since her mom's boyfriend kicked them out, Amber, her mom, and her totally loyal dog, Bobby Big Boy (aka Thrice B) have been camped out in the back of Hello Yellow (the school bus her mom drives). Still, Amber, the self-proclaimed princess of hope and girl of unyielding optimism, refuses to sweat the bad stuff. But when a fatal tragedy threatens Amber's optimism—and her way of life, can Amber continue to be the rock star of hope?


Exposition:

Amber's mom was an alcholic and had trouble with finding the right guy, and

because of this problem it landed them to be homeless living on a bus , that her mom drived during the day.

Rising Action:Amber goes to the Methodist home where she meets Old Man Thompson and Old Man Linder. Amber goes here every Wednesday to do battle with Joan of Old; Joan of Old tries to get Amber to cry with her criticism, and Amber tries to get Joan of Old to smile with her positivity. In fine Amber fashion, Amber bribes her way in with Thrice B by giving Door Woman Lucy a Snicker’s bar and a cup of hot chocolate

Climax:1)Amber is faced with the tragic loss of her mother. Shes feels as if she has lost all hope and faith. her outlook on everything changes completely, her faith in God slips, her social contact falls through the cracks, and basically gives up on everything

2)Amber’s idol Donna became ambers legal guardian, and moves her into her home, gives her a room, new clothes, and new furniture

Falling Action: Amber tells Donna to drop her off at Private Jackson's house. When she gets there PJ makes them green tea as usual and before Amber can even drink it she burst into tears. PJ holds her in a fatherly way and hands her a haiku

2)Amber suddenly wakes up from her depression when she needs to raise money for BBB’s surgery. She makes breakfast for Donna and Ricky and goes to school again

3)Amber goes to Franks room where her and Franks Freak Force Federation brainstorm ideas for a variety show to raise money for BBB’s surgery. The Five continue to gather ideas for the variety show. Amber goes and tells Prince Tony her idea and then makes an announcement to her school. Amber tells them about The Save Bobby Big Boy Variety Show and that she needs two to three thousand dollars to save BBB. Many people of the school are getting involved in the show

4)The show starts and everyone performs their acts. Old Man Thompson sings Ricky does math problems, the football team does a scene from West Side Story, and DWL and the KDFC’s end by singing R&B songs. Then they see how much money had been raised. The sum increases from 0 to

215,671.87

Resolution:

Prom time comes and she goes with Ricky, afterwards they go to Ty's beach house. Amber wants to go she her mom's killer but waits till her 18th birthday.She goes into the prison and sees a man with crazy hair, dressed in an orange jumpsuit. He motions for her to put the headphones on but she doesn’t listen. Instead Amber puts up the haiku “You may exit in this world-but I exist too and I will not yield. She leaves the prison and gives Ty his present a razor and she cuts off his friendship beard. Amber and The Five finally go to Friendly’s where Amber realizes she can’t give up because she is a hope spreader.

Main Characters

Mom-Amber’s mother is poor and is driving a school bus for a living. She always went and drank at night and didn’t come back until early in the morning. She also smoked a lot and wasn’t able to feed Amber as much as a child should eat.

3B- Amber’s dog. Amber found him abandoned in a cardboard box. After Amber’s mom died, BBB had a tumor. Amber did a variety show for the money to pay for his surgery.

Ricky-is 17 and Autistic. He has four friends including Amber Appleton, Ty Hendrix, Chad Fox, and Jared Fox. He only has a mother named Donna Roberts. Ricky can do math very well and is also an atheist.

Donna- Ricky’s atheist single mother whom cares for Amber like her own and is a successful Attorney at LawFranks.

Ty-One of Amber’s friends and part of the Frank Freak Force Federation. Ty is the only black student at school.

Father Chee-He’s the Pastor of KDFC. When Amber was in shock when her mother died, he visited Amber when he was jogging early in the mornings. He helped Amber get out of tight spots and helped her when she was sad.

The Korean Divas for Christ-A Korean group that doesn’t know English that well. Amber taught them by singing sings with them.

Conflicts

There are several conflicts that take place in the course of this book. Some being major and minor but still taking a part of Amber's daily struggles.

2)Amber is homeless beginng and majority of the story. As stated earlier Amber has been kicked out of her mom's boyfriend house , leaving them to leave in a school bus(yeahhhh)
