TxSP Passwords for 2019-20 School Year!
For security purposes, TxSP has changed each District’s Subscriber password for renewing members. Emails with new passwords were sent July 31, which should have been distributed to your district administrators, counselor, nurses, and all others who may benefit from the database. Your District Admin password WAS NOT CHANGED.
SB 11 and SB 18
The two Senate Bills listed above are bringing sweeping updates and changes to address safety, mental health, training for staff members, and district counseling programs with changes starting this 2019-20 school year and more coming for the upcoming 2020-21 school year. TxSP will keep you updated with new protocols and documents that are forthcoming. Stay tuned!
Campus and District Operational Sections - Discipline
A new filing drawer under Discipline entitled Suspension has been added that includes the new requirements listed in the protocol and a new letter in English and Spanish has been developed.
A new section for Seclusion has also been added to support campus administrators in understanding the process and a new document created to report a seclusion incident.
District Expulsion has been updated as well. If the district chooses to develop guidelines for length of placements in DAEP and Expulsion, a new protocol has been developed and the Document has been updated to include the TEC, Chapter 37 changes.
Campus Operational - Safety
TxSP already has a great safety section to manage day-to-day operations. A new updated protocol for Threat to Self/Suicide Ideation has been added to meet the requirements, which is lead by campus counselors. The newest addition has been the Threat to Others that helps districts understand when to do a threat assessment when a student may be at risk to hurt others, how to do the assessment and all the tools to implement the new process. There is even a training section to prepare your threat assessment team. This process is led by campus administrators.
All the documents and protocols are aligned with research-based practices. With our posted presentation, districts should be able to train their campus teams, but TxSP is available to come to your district and prepare your staff and teams for this process.
Student Support - DAEP and Transition Plans
A new requirement is for transitional plans to be written for a student returning from not only DAEP, but from hospitalization and treatment programs plus a student returning for a JJAEP or Juvenile Placement. The transition plan back from an alternative education program should be reviewed and handled through campus administrators while the hospitalization/treatment plan should be handled through the campus counselor.
Labor Department Rules IEP Meetings a Valid Reason for FMLA
Many parents do not participate in IEP meetings for fear of losing their jobs. Not only do our HR District departments need to be aware, but our parents of special needs students need to be aware of this change in FMLA so that they can leave their work under the FMLA guidelines.
