Creativity is needed in the job market!
How to be more creative?
In modern times the ability to create is becoming increasingly valuable. We now have the technology and computer software to automate repetitive tasks. This allows us to focus more toward solving the more right-brained creative problems. Given the shift in focus from repetitive tasks to creative solutions, people like are studying how to motivate for creativity.
Dan’s TED talk, titled “The Puzzle of Motivation,” talks about the motivation behind the creative process. He states that if you want to incentivize creativity, then you can’t do it via normal methods such as offering higher pay or better rewards. He cites studies that show that as the value of a reward goes up, the performance on these creative projects gets worse.
To illustrate, he used the example of a puzzle that consists of a candle, a box of tacks and a packet of matches. The objective of the puzzle is to figure out a way to attach the candle to the wall so that the candle will burn all the way down. The key to solving the puzzle is to dump the tacks out of the box, use the tacks to secure the box to the wall, and put the candle in the box.
The answer is intrinsic motivation.
