A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BAME
Dear Laurel Park Families,
Greetings and happy March! Boosterthon is here and ready to support our school with fundraising. We are so appreciative of our PTA and family community for volunteering their time and providing resources for our school. Boosterthon Challenge for Tonight:
Every student who gets a new pledge of ANY amount tonight can wear their PAJAMAS TO SCHOOL TOMORROW!! Enter pledges on funrun.com or turn in cash/check to the front office with your student's name and their teacher's name. Thank you for helping LPES raise funds for Outdoor & Indoor Learning Resources!
Student Council is sponsoring the Laurel Park Elementary School Most Adorable Staff Pet Contest. In front of the media center voters will find pictures of staff members' pets that are competing. We are asking our LPE community to contribute spare change from home and vote for the pet that is the most adorable or funny. Students can only vote during arrival time (8:45 – 9:15 am). LPE community members may vote multiple times. All money collected will go to the Wake County SPCA. You can make a life-changing difference for thousands of homeless pets in need and in finding a new home.

Volunteers Needed for Eat A Rainbow Event
LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
Eat a Rainbow, Taste the Garden
We are looking for volunteers to coordinate this annual program that encourages our students to try a rainbow of healthy fruits and vegetables. The coordinators will be responsible for organizing the sign-ups for both food donations and day of event volunteers. The coordinator will need to be available to be at LPES the day of Eat a Rainbow and lead volunteers in prepping the food and distributing to students. In order to run this program, we need 2 coordinators, one for each date:
Tracks 1, 2, & 3 Friday, April 12th
Track 4 Friday, April 26th
Art Newsletter – Spring 2019
Hello LPES Families,
The art room is busy with many colorful and creative projects this spring. I want to extend a huge thank you to families who have donated wipes, large hand sanitizer bottles, tissues, and other wish list items over the past few months. All items are being used every day to help all the students in the school!
Current projects include:
Kindergarten:
These classes are learning about the famous artist, Pablo Picasso. They are leaning about his life and art work, and are using fine motor skills to draw and paint their own Picasso style cubist face.
First grade:
These classes are making a crazy frog sculpture with air dry clay, and then painting and decorating it. If you make it to the 1st grade hallway, you can see some of them on display in the glass case.
Second grade:
These classes are exploring the art of the Kuna culture. The Kuna people create beautiful, colorful, and meaningful Molas by sewing. They live in Panama. Second graders are learning how to draw their own Molas in the Kuna style step by step. Painting these Molas is the final step.
Third grade:
These classes are learning about the rich history and process of making Illuminated Letters. They are choosing a theme, and creating a balanced letter and border design by drawing and coloring.
Fourth grade:
These classes are studying lighthouses across North Carolina, and creating a drawing of their own lighthouse. The final step is to create a sky by painting the background.
Fifth grade:
These classes are finishing up a realistic animal portrait unit, and starting a radial weaving unit with yarn. If you come by the art room and the gym, you will see these portraits displayed in the hallway. They look great, and 5th graders worked very hard on these!
Lastly, if you have a 5th grader who will be attending Lufkin Middle School, the art teacher at Lufkin will be hosting an Italy trip for this coming year for any interested incoming 6th graders. I have the fliers that give more information. Please tell your child to ask me for one. There is an informational meeting in late March about this travel opportunity. If you would like to RSVP for this experience and want to talk directly with the art teacher, you can contact her (Beth Barlow) at https://rsvp.eftours.com/erg7afx or ebarlow@wcpss.net
Artfully Yours,
Mrs. Laura Binnick
Boosterthon is Here!
This year, our goal is to raise $30,000 for PTA Programming and Outdoor Resources, and we need EVERYONE’S help! Please begin thinking about friends and family who could pledge your student for the Laurel Park Boosterthon Fun Run. We want this to be fun and easy for everyone, so think of others who can support your student as they run laps to help our school.
Look for a Pledgebook to come home on Monday, 3/4 (or Monday, 3/11 for track 2) with more information. And don’t forget to save the Fun Run Date—Friday, 3/8 (T1) and Thursday, 3/14 (T2/3/4)—on your calendar. You’re invited to come out and cheer on our students! More details to come.
