Superintendent's Community Update
October 19, 2022
A Message from Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Dear Newport Parents, Families, and Staff:
As promised in last week’s update, the Middletown Superintendent Rosemarie Kraeger and I have been working to develop a set of ideas on how regionalization could benefit all of our students academically, financially, and programmatically. You can review our ideas here, including universal pre-K, a new P-TECH Agriculture/Aquaculture program, new CTE pathways, and the importance of creating a business model for financing our schools in a predictable way. This is important because as of now our schools do not have that ability to plan strategically to build strong school systems. The ability to build a predictable model could be a game changer not just for the regionalized school district, if it passes, but could serve as a model for other school systems. That is one of the ideas noted. That, along with the possibilities to build and grow programs that are planned, vetted, and given time to grow would enable systematic change-different from how school budgets are funded now.
Please note that these are just initial ideas. That is important to remember. The board of the new regionalized school district, should it be approved, would need to formally adopt these ideas and recommendations, as well as others you as community, parent members and staff would like to see for our children and the future. Working together, and having committed leaders to do what is best for our students and families, will be key if regionalization passes and for it to be successful. If the vote to regionalize passes, the change will not happen immediately, as people will need to work together, build relationships, and take it one step at a time discussing how and what our communities would like to see.
If you’re interested to learn more about regionalization, there will be two public forums next week. On October 24th from 6:30pm-8:30pm at the CCRI Newport campus, the Newport and Middletown councils will meet jointly to discuss regionalization. And on October 27th from 5:30-7:30 at Oliphant School, 26 Oliphant Lane, Middletown, there will be a panel discussion of the superintendents, school committee chairs and vice-chairs answering questions. Audience members will be able to submit written questions to the panel that evening or you may send questions to Ms. Cathy Nash at cathynash@npsri.net.
Sincerely,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Cathy Nash at cathynash@npsri.net.
Sinceramente,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Superintendente

Senator Reed and Navy Commanding Officer James McIver Visits To Congratulate Pell On Winning $500,000 DoDEA Grant For STREAM Learning
Last Thursday, Senator Jack Reed and Naval Station Newport Commanding Officer James McIver joined us to celebrate Pell Elementary being awarded a $500,000 Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grant for Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, the Arts & Math (STREAM) learning!
Last year our teachers and students were flying drones in the hallways and classrooms. Students and teachers were busy programming drones to travel the building up and down. This year they are donning the 3D glasses and working with virtual reality- dissecting the heart, playing chess, and recreating artificial limbs for robots. As you can see from last week’s visit from Senator Reed, everyone wants to get in on this, as our fabulous Pell Teacher Ms. Siebens supports her students learning this new technology and tool.
So a BIG Congratulations to Pell Elementary School for Being Awarded its second Department of Defense Grant of $500,000 for Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art and Math! Go Pell Champions!
