From the President
How quickly time flies….It’s hard to believe that my year as SSL President is about to come to an end. My presidential year started and ended in a pandemic and while lots of activities, conferences, and plans were scrapped, I think SSL still did a lot of great things this year. Many of them were behind the scenes with planning, organizing, and advocating, but we had a couple of great virtual programs and we were thrilled to be able to have the Leadership Institute. All of this work couldn’t have gotten done without the SSL Board. I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them for all the time they put into planning, meetings, reports, emails, and in helping me keep everything running during this unique year. I also want to thank all of the SSL members for continuing to renew their memberships and for joining us on this journey. I met many new people this year and learned so much more about our professional organization.
I want to wish incoming President Lisa Perkowski and incoming President-Elect Madelyn Haussner the best for the 2021-2022 year! They are wonderful leaders that will continue to guide us in following SSL’s mission. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us!
I also want to give special thanks to outgoing Past-President Tara Thibault-Edmonds for her 3 years of leadership. She has been very helpful to me as I navigated all that being SSL President entailed. I know she’s happily dancing off the main stage, but she will continue on the SSL Board as our Knickerbocker Chair.

Leadership Institute is BACK with Part I: Breaking Down Bias

After a hiatus for “you know what,” the NYLA-SSL Carol Kearney Leadership Institute returned for 2021. Held at the Sheraton at Syracuse University from July 29-30, the focus of this year’s annual Institute was “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Part 1: Breaking Down Bias."
The Institute, attended by 69 school librarians and library system directors, was organized by NYLA-SSL Ed Leadership chairs Sara Kelly Johns and Lisa Perkowski and their team. With author Linda Sue Park, Cicely Lewis, AASL President, NY librarian Maegen Rose, an amazing Book Discussion led and organized by Mary Lou O’Connor, Annarose Foley, and Livia Sabourin, and Melissa Jacobs, NYC Director of Library Services all of who inspired, challenged, and gave us insight into the depths and facets of bias. Book Review
What She Left Behind by Ellen Marie Wiseman is a historical fiction piece about the 1920s. This novel pulled me in from the beginning and kept me the whole time. This would be more for upper high school or adults. The novel follows Clara Cartwright on her journey from wealth to being institutionalized by her own father. If you’re looking for a great historical fiction novel set in the 1920s and dealing with the topic of institutionalization and how it was handled then I would highly recommend this novel. Plus she is a NYS author!

Amber Gladle as a shared position I work for both the local BOCES building and a school district. Part of my job is to develop programs for teachers and librarians along with being a PK-12 librarian at a local district. As such I decided it would be best for me to find a program that would help me learn and branch out more in the leadership field. So I found the NYLA Developing Leaders Program. NYLA began a Developing Leaders Program in 2020. Last year was their second year for this program and I was fortunate enough to be selected to participate in cohort two for this highly sought out program. The developing leaders program allows librarians from school, public, academic and special areas to connect and work together to create a more collaborative approach to the library. This program was held virtually and allowed for me to participate right from St. Lawrence County with others from Albany, Rochester, Buffalo and Long Island. My group created a Toolkit to help bring new librarians into the profession.
Our toolkit has several pieces in it to share out with prospective students and employers. Please feel free to share the information with your colleagues and students. Here is the link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1P75NxJrEaIV8sC6UXJ4GXOS4AcdGARBR?usp=sharing
Librarianship is a huge part of today's society and being able to participate in a program to focus solely on the leadership aspect and bring forth a greater understanding of the world of library was an honor. I hope to continue to use my knowledge from this program to continue building and strengthen relationships with others in the field of library.
