MISSION
A Note from your Principal
Dear West Newton families,
Welcome back from spring break! I hope everyone had a chance to rest and relax as well as enjoy some family time together. I want to make you aware of a few events that are happening this month. First, on Tues., April 10 at 6:00p.m., we will hold our PTO Meeting in the media center – we welcome all parents and guardians. Our PTO is busily planning for the Grade 6 Celebration as well as preparing for our May BOGO Book Fair.
The month of April marks the end of the year testing window. We will begin administering the second round of ISTEP to our grade 3-6 students beginning the week of April 16th. Our school-wide strategies of marking and coding for text evidence, CUBES, and Yes, Ma’am have proven valuable tools for our students. The second round of ISTEP is multiple choice responses and will also be paper/pencil for our students rather than online.
April 25th is a day set aside to recognize West Newton’s administrative assistants. We are fortunate to have extremely competent, efficient, and pleasant secretaries who run our school office. Bridgett Enright is the principal’s secretary and Cindy Mills is the clerical/receptionist; both do a magnificent job monitoring phones, assisting visitors and students, tracking attendance, helping with injured students, assisting with emergency drills, and a host of other responsibilities that come with running a very busy school office. Mrs. Enright and Mrs. Mills are great staff members to know and can answer almost any question you might have about our school!
Finally, the month of April offers several opportunities to showcase our students’ talents. Wed., April 11 beginning at 5pm at DTSE’s Community Room is the Decatur Township Technology Showcase featuring projects from students in grades 3-12 throughout the district. Thurs., April 12 from 6-7pm at the Decatur Township Public Library is the Decatur Township Art Show featuring student artwork winners in grades 1-6 from West Newton as well as the other schools in the township.
Thank you for sharing your children with the staff of West Newton!
With Tiger Pride,
Susan D. Strube

SCHOOL-WIDE STRATEGIES
The West Newton staff utilizes school-wide strategies to support students in grades 1-6 with instruction aligned with the Indiana College and Career Ready Standards. The rigor increases as students progress through each grade level, but all staff use the same common strategies to support student learning.
Reading = Yes, Ma’am and marking & coding for text evidence
Math = CUBES problem solving steps and Math Fact Mastery
Writing = 6 Traits of Writing
Science = Indiana Science Initiative and cross-curricular embedding with reading of nonfiction
Social Studies = Cross-curricular embedding with reading of nonfiction
These strategies support our students with critical thinking skills and set high expectations for completion of work.
