## Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break! Students are excited for next week's STEM day. Thank you to all of you who have sent in cardboard boxes, tubes, etc. for the special activity we have planned. We are in need of masking tape to build our structures. If you have an extra roll or two you could send in, we would appreciate it. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!

## Language Arts

We have read the first three chapters of the The Adventures of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo for our read aloud. Students used the comprehension strategy of visualization as they listened to the story and wrote the names of characters they’ve met in their reader’s response packets. Next week we will discuss the comprehension strategy of inferring or what I like to call reading the invisible ink. The author doesn’t always tell us what to think or feel and we have to use the clues given to us to think about the story.

## Mathematics

Students sorted “special” blocks based on their attributes: color, size, shape and thickness. They were then asked to find a block based on its attributes. For example, students were asked to find a “small, blue, thick, triangle” or a “large, yellow, thin, octagon.” We also learned that a polygon is a many sided figure that is made of three or more sides that meet at their end points. Next week we will turn our attention to symmetry and 3-D shapes. This will be useful as we prepare for our school-wide STEM day. Our focus will be on three-dimensional designs as we create our own city using all the cardboard boxes, tubes, etc. that students brought in!

## Units

Next week we will read the book, Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, JR. by Doreen Rappaport. We will pull some of Martin’s big words from the text and discuss what they mean. Words like peace, respect, hope and equal are just a few of the words. We we will also talk about the life of Dr. King and what his legacy means to us.
