Mindset of the Month
7 Mindsets is the district adopted social emotional curriculum for students K-5. Each month we will focus on a different mindset. Each mindset will be introduced in our Panther Families at the beginning of the month. Mrs. Wilson's weekly character ed lessons in the classroom will feature the mindset of the month as well. Click below for more information about 7 Mindsets.
Passion First
This month at Sunflower, we are focusing on learning to live the mindset Passion First. The Passion First mindset teaches us to understand our unique gifts, skills and strengths, and how to share them with the world to the maximum extent possible. Not only will students explore their interests, they will begin to identify their core values and what they stand for. The next step is helping them learn how to make their dreams into reality, tapping into both the courage and perseverance needed to overcome any challenges they encounter in pursuit of the lives they desire.
Understanding Our Strengths and Believing in Ourselves
A video we used to introduce the idea of focusing on our strengths and believing in ourselves was a fun clip from the popular Finding Nemo movie.
Tips for parents to support the Passion First mindset at home:
- Help your child identify their strengths and passions. Praise them often. Children (of course) like to be complimented on what they do well. Often, they concentrate on their weaknesses and miss opportunities to feel proud of their accomplishments.
- Encourage a growth mindset (we call above the line thinking in character ed). No matter what they might be struggling with now - math, reading, conflict with another, whatever it may be - let them know all problems have a solution and together we keep practicing.
- Spend time with your child discussing core values. Children need to know what they stand for and what’s important to them. Some families establish family mottos dealing with respect for others and giving back to the community. For example, “Whatever you can conceive and believe, you can achieve”. Having conversations about what is important helps your child discover who they are.
- Do fun things and understand that every moment is a teaching moment. Take your children on a hike and you may learn how much they enjoy being outside. Take them to a museum and see if they are interested in art. These are opportunities to talk about pursuing their passions and talents in various areas.
Sunflower Stands Together
No one at Sunflower stands alone. We all stand for our values of kindness, compassion, forgiveness and belonging. We stand together!
