November 2019 - Bernal Intermediate

Principal's Message

Greetings Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to November! With the week of vacation this month for the Thanksgiving Holiday, it will be a short month. A lot is going on this month at Bernal. In athletics, girls’ basketball is in full swing. If you’re ever interested in seeing high caliber basketball being played, come out to see our lady Broncos in action! The Fall band concert was a huge success. As usual, Ms. Fennern has her jazz, concert, and beginning bands performing at a high level. Parents, teachers, staff and even children that were in attendance at the concert all have raved about how well the students’ played. Congrats to Ms. Fennern and her musicians!

Be sure to remind your student(s) about Bernal’s student clubs. They are operating in full capacity right now and if your student signed up for one or more student clubs, remind them to make sure they are keeping their commitment when they signed up and continue their attendance regularly!

We have finished our transition to our new ‘Parent Square’ parent notification system. Bernal parent and guardians’ contact information already on file has been seamless transitioned into our new program and you should be receiving communication already. Contact my office if you have any questions about Parent Square.

We are super excited about our new After School Academy beginning Monday, November 4. Program operates Monday through Friday, with hours from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Many parents have already signed up and/or inquired about the program. If you have additional questions, please contact my office.

That’s it for now, as always, take care of yourselves and each other!

Jamal D. Splane, Principal

Assistant Principal's Message

Welcome to November!

November is a month of taking time to reflect and express gratitude for those people and experiences that we’ve been blessed within our lives. Mid-month is kicked off with Veterans Day when we all stop for a moment to honor those men and women who’ve served our country. November can also be the start of the hectic holiday season that brings changes in school and family routines. Even the time of day and daytime changes as we “Fall back” for Daylight Savings! This season of change can often be challenging to navigate both at home and at school, but with a bit of patience and cooperative teamwork, we can support our kids by sticking to as many regular routines (like attending school!) as possible.

During the month of November, Bernal Intermediate will be having an active shooter drill. This Run Hide Defend drill includes a significant amount of training and preparation by students and staff in conjunction with law enforcement and other emergency responders. Since practicing the drill, Bernal Intermediate has continued to review safety procedures and protocols, assess building access points, and prepare for a response using Run, Hide, Defend, a nationally recognized model for responding to intruders in a school setting. As part of our ongoing efforts, the District holds drills throughout the school year with staff and age-appropriate training with students. The goal of any drill is to improve our ability to protect students. Students and staff are aware that the drill will be occurring and will review materials in their Advisory class.

Bernal After School Academy

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Starting November 4th, there will be a brand new FREE After-School Academy program for Bernal students. The program is Monday through Friday, 2:30-4:30 pm and runs through the 19-20 school year. The program will help students get support with their homework and allow them to participate in fun, outdoor activities! The first hour students will be working on iReady lessons and homework. The second hour students will participate in supervised physical activities. If you want to be a part of this awesome opportunity, make sure to fill out a permission slip and send it in by November 1st! Spots are limited to 30 students. If you want to secure your student's spot, please print, sign, and return the attached permission slip to Dr. Splane (electronically at jsplane@ogsd.net) or your student can return it to Dr. Splane in the office.

Contact Dr. Splane's office with questions at 408-578-5731 or jsplane@ogsd.net
