We Are A.R.M.Y. Strong!!
Black History Month, Concert “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing.”
Saturday, Feb. 25th, 6pm
1801 Washington Avenue
On February 25, 2017, Washington Middle School will present a concert to celebrate Black History Month, entitled “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing.” The concert, beginning at 6pm, will feature the Advanced Choir, alongside guest artist, Ms. Calesta Day. The program will include music from the African-American gospel tradition, African American Spirituals, and music inspired by both.
In addition to the musical offering, student artwork and student responses to the movie Hidden Figures will be on display. Recently, the students took a school-wide field trip to see the movie, which highlights a very important facet of African-American history. The wrap-up curriculum gave students an ability to respond to the movie, identify different “hidden figures” in history, and connect the movie to their lives.
Calesta Day, soprano, gained a following after a video of her rehearsing for a concert went viral on social media in the spring of 2016. Ms. Day has many accolades to her credit, including a long relationship with the internationally acclaimed American Spiritual Ensemble. Calesta gained attention last year when a video of her rehearsing for a concert (much like ours) went viral on social media, with something around 20 million hits. The video, for your edification, can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2V9nZ465Co
The concert begins at 6pm in the Washington Middle School Auditorium. Admission is $2 for adults, and $1 for students. For further information, please contact the school office at 812-477-8983.

Penny Lane Study Cafe and Retakes
If your child needs additional support with any subject, they can stay after for tutoring. In order to schedule after school tutoring, students can go to Google Classroom and join the class with the following code: tld1ot From that Classroom, they can sign up to stay for tutoring.
We are trying to keep the classes small, so students can get the help they need. If students do not sign up for the sessions or schedule an assessment with their teacher, they will not be able to stay. Please let us know if you have questions or concerns regarding help for your child.
Thank your teachers
Washington's Grading Policy
1=Far Below Proficiency
2= Approaching Proficiency
3=Proficient (students do not need to be perfect on an assessment to be proficient)
**Homework and classwork are intended to be practice for the assessments. Those will be marked in the gradebook as complete (Y) or not complete (N).
At the end of the grading period, we look at the percentage of skills they show to be proficient to determine the report card grade. The scale is as follows:
80%-89% = B
59% or below = F
Students will not have as many items in the gradebook, but we want them to show proficiency on each skill before the end of the quarter. This means we will reteach and allow for retakes each quarter. Again, there are fewer skills, but that allows for us to teach in different ways and ensure that students are learning the material required to move on. In addition, we teach students that, even if they don't know it the first time, they need to keep working. The goal is growth and constant improvement.
For more information about our grading policy, you can visit the website below or join us for parent information sessions starting early in September. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Branson.
