The long-term benefits of music
It’s hard to believe, but it’s time to begin selecting courses for the next school year, and I want to make sure that instrumental music continues to be a part of your child’s school day! I know that there are many choices that you make for your child that impact their future growth and development, and often parents wonder just what is best. As you make the decision, please keep the following in mind:
Study after study has shown that learning to play music has tremendous benefits on the minds of our young people.
In fact, we have yet to find a problem, academic or otherwise that music doesn’t have a positive impact upon.
Click here to read about the positive influence playing music has on youth.
Your child is still very much in the beginning stages of learning their instrument. It’s only through continued effort and the process of doing something challenging over a long period of time that students reap the rewards of music study. And through long term participation, we begin to see their passion, interest and desire grow. Being part of a music ensemble helps students develop grit and creativity while being actively involved in a learning process that brings people together, teaches cooperation, demands attention to detail and is just plain rewarding!
Finally, many elective courses that we offer can be studied at a later date, when there is more flexibility in the school scheduling process. However, music is a sequential curriculum. Sadly, children who stop studying music rarely come back to it at a later date because they fall too far behind their peers.
In short, your child is just starting to get good, and now is the WORST possible time to quit. You and your child will never know the impact studying music can have on them if they give up on it just as the effects are beginning to take hold.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions, or would like to discuss this further.
Sincerely,
Mr. B
Standards of Excellence Achievement Chart!

5th grade Band now has Google Classroom!
Most of the students have been invited through Google Classroom but if they were not, the class code is: mklnwhq
There is a YouTube video in the classroom to show you how to submit a recording (it’s a Spanish teacher showing how to submit a voice memo with her phone). Recording your instrument is the exact same way! Try it out today!
Grading for 5th grade band
Every week, there will be 9 points per attendance, effort, and preparedness (can they play the assignments, did they bring all materials) and 10 points for practice logs.

I have questions! Who do I ask?
Required practice at home
Make sure a parent or guardian initials the practice journal to verify that yes, my child did practice. Have your kids show you the practice journal page!
PARENTS! We need your help and support on you child practicing! Make sure they have a proper space to practice and constantly encourage them! You will hear some "learning sounds" but it will get better! Ask them to play for you! Or, if you don't know anything about music, let them teach you!
Private Lessons are SO good for you!
