Research on Social-Emotional Learning and Student Outcomes
While many studies document the benefits of social emotional learning and link interventions to future success, results of rigorous academic research can vary between programs and specific outcomes measured. Here are some key research studies on the impact of social emotional learning interventions on student outcomes.
CASEL: Updated Definition for Social-Emotional Learning
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish learning environments and experiences that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation. SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities.

Starfish Initiative
Starfish Initiative is a nonprofit organization based in Indianapolis. Our mission is to Inspire, Encourage, and Prepare academically-promising, high school students facing unearned adversity for college and career success. Using our distinctive one-on-one mentoring model, Starfish Initiative matches every student in our program with a college-educated, volunteer adult mentor. Supported by Starfish Match Specialists, the adult mentors help their scholars effectively prepare for personal and academic success. Starfish Initiative has a proven track record of helping promising students overcome barriers to achieve economic mobility, develop cultural capacity and develop leadership skills necessary to prepare for personal and academic success. 100% of Starfish Scholars who complete our 4-year program graduate from high school. 98% go on to enroll in colleges or universities across Indiana — and beyond.
No more than ever, we need mentors who can provide stability and support for our Starfish Scholars. The simple act of investing your time in a young person’s future can make a big impact, and make a greater change.

Project AWARE
As we head into the colder months, the Project AWARE state team continues to acknowledge the stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the mental health challenges that may come from limited in-person social interactions this winter season. Last month, Project AWARE expanded to fund eight additional local education agencies, now serving a total of eleven districts within Indiana. As grant activities begin for these districts during a uniquely challenging moment in time, Project AWARE encourages and reminds students, families and communities to safely reach out to social supports and to practice self-care, identifying emotions and communicating needs.
