Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 2nd February 2018
Our Sparkling Christingle Service
The Cathedral kindly funded our jacket potato tea, but thanks are also due to the caterers who stayed on at school to cook for us and all our staff for joining in. There was excited chatter on the walk up to the Cathedral together, but once inside everyone was as good as gold. The service was led beautifully by Canon Ailsa, with our Singing Squad doing a great job also. We learnt that this service, although traditionally held in December, actually has a place in January as it is still Advent and remembers the time when Jesus, the light of the world, was first taken to the Temple by his parents.
We think everyone who joined us, and thanks to you also for coming, will have very special memories of this sparkling occasion.
Year 3 Go Back to the Stone Age
On Thursday, Year 3 spent the day in a Stone Age village. The children got to farm, hunt and make clay pots as they would have done in the Stone Age. The class were renamed wolf tribe and all had green / brown marks on their face to show they were a member of the tribe. To end the day the class were told a story of a cave man who was discovered frozen in the snowy mountains. It was a fantastic educational visit, although sometimes we wondered if we were in the Ice Age as it was rather chilly!

Celebrations at Oscar's!
The holiday club in the half term break is shaping up to be full of celebrations and special days! On Monday, in honour of Chinese New Year, the children will be trying different Chinese foods, experimenting and competing with chopsticks and making Chinese lanterns and a big dragon. On Tuesday, of course they will be making pancakes, and going as a group to the pancake races outside the Cathedral. As Wednesday is Valentine's Day, there will be baking and crafts (which may well involve heart shapes!).
Book online to join in the fun. It's £20 for 9am to 5pm or £15 for 9am to 1pm / 1pm to 5pm. Contact Mrs Rich if you have not yet used the online booking system and need some assistance.

A Message from the Cathedral
It was lovely to enjoy the Christingle service with so many children, parents and staff. The Cathedral was filled with candlelight, wonderful music from the Singing Squad and thoughtful reflections from Year 6 about how to bring Jesus’s light into our world.
You are all warmly invited to the Cathedral for our regular services too. Children’s Church meets every week during term time at our main 10.30 Sunday service. There is also a creche where parents can entertain younger children.
As it is the first Sunday of the month, this Sunday (4th February) is Children’s Church Xtra. Join us (with or without parents) at the Cathedral Hall for crafts, games, story telling and an opportunity to look after Wilfrid the prayer bear! On other Sundays in the month, children are collected from the Cathedral during the service to have fun in an adjoining chapel while their parents stay to enjoy the worship.
So come along and experience worship with us in your beautiful Cathedral. You will find a warm welcome, a vibrant community, inspiring music, and an opportunity to be renewed by God’s presence in our lives.
