WEEKLY WONDERS

Charles Ellis Montessori Academy, October 11, 2021

Big picture

"This is the period in which discipline becomes established: a form of active peace, of obedience and love, when work is perfected and multiplied, just as when the flowers in the spring get their colors and prepare a distant harvest of sweet and nourishing fruit."

Discipline is not about rewards and punishment. Rather it is about opportunities that engage a child in perfecting their skills, so that they can refine their interactions with the world. This requires patience and understanding of the child's motives, so that we can guide them towards fulfilling their passions while building empathy for others. It is not always about "I am going to teach you a lesson!" but about truly seizing opportunities that hold the lesson within.

Consider the discipline of Ikebana, an ancient Japanese art form where flowers are arranged by strict rules of form and balance. The purpose of making Ikebana floral arrangements, is not to create decorations. Rather the purpose is to learn to appreciate certain things that people normally ignore i.e. the nature and beauty of the shapes of the flowers and how they might represent our place in the universe. Similarly, if we can guide our children to create and arrange lives that have balance, purpose and meaning, then they will bloom into the self-disciplined human that is already there for us to admire.

Peace,

Ms. Tanya

"Great Schools Have Great Principals"

October is National Principals Month!

We want to take this time to thank Ms. Tanya for all that she does on a daily basis for our staff and students. She always puts the best interest of our school community at the forefront of everything she does.

If you wish to show your appreciation, you can send Ms. Tanya a quick note of encouragement (tanya.melville@sccpss.com).

Devices Brought to School Daily

If your student takes their school device home on a daily basis, PLEASE make sure that they are bringing it back to school EVERY DAY, FULLY CHARGED. Students need their devices at school for district assessments, Explorations, etc.

Students must also have their own set of earbuds/headphones. We cannot share these items among students for hygiene reasons.

If you would like your student to keep their device at school, please contact your student's teacher to arrange that.

Thank you for your help with teaching our students to be responsible for their school materials.
