York Avenue Family Newsletter - 5/15/22
Message from Mrs. Richardson
Dear York Avenue Families,
With many thanks to Ms. Taylor, Ms. Cross and PIE Parent, Jennifer Svetlik, a StoryWalk is now placed on the outside of the fence around the basketball court! It will be great to have families enjoy it before or after the May Fair. More info is below.
Students have the Scholastic Book Fair in school on the 19th and 20th. You can shop together in the evening during the May Fair as well. Come out and support our school!
The May Fair is on Friday, 5/20, from 6:00-8:00pm. You may purchase tickets and raffle baskets at the event with cash or PayPal. Additionally, the playground will be closed after school on Friday, 5/20, in order for our volunteers to set up for May Fair. Students are not permitted to play in the yard after school. Please have them go directly home and get ready to join us for an evening of fun!
YA's Earth Week celebrations have been spread out over a few weeks in May and June to accommodate our PSSA schedule this year. Students will continue to take part in activities in school around the following themes:

StoryWalk
What is the StoryWalk® Project?
An innovative and fun way for children — and adults! — to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time.
Teachers, classes, and families are invited to stroll around the fence, to read the pages in the story and listen to them read in both Bengali and English by York Ave Elementary students.
Laminated pages from the book "Am I Small?" are attached to the fence outside the school, starting near the bike rack. Don't forget to sign the guest book!
Created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed with the help of Rachel Senechal, Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.
Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This month is nationally recognized as a time to recognize the contributions of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) throughout history. Did you know that Lansdale is amongst the communities in Pennsylvania with the largest share of Asian population?
Please take time this month to explore this page full of resources put together by NPSD, as we celebrate AAPI Heritage month together.
Penndale Middle School--Home & School Info
Will you have a child attending Penndale next year? The Penndale H&S Board is looking to fill some of their board positions and would love to have you! It's an important job, but we promise it's not nearly as heavy of a lift as Elementary School H&S.
Please see the attached graphics for more info about some of the ways that Penndale H&S contributes. We need a few more leadership volunteers so we can keep these important programs alive.

Better Speech and Hearing Month
Mid-May Counselor's Corner
The countdown to the end of the year is on! It has been wonderful to see many students playing together before and after school- I hope that they get to continue this over the summer.
As we know, the pandemic years have not been easy on anyone and kids who have trouble making friends and socializing have struggled as well. For kids who are shy, isolation from peers might have made life easier in the short term, but interacting can be even more stressful when out of practice! Please see the linked article for some tips on helping reluctant children join in play and group scenarios. Helping Young Children who are Socially Anxious.
Thank you for your continued support in your child’s social emotional learning.
