Message from the Principal
Dear Central Road Families,
Veteran’s Day was incredible! Thank you to our PTA for coordinating a lovely breakfast for our visitors. The students and guests enjoyed an assembly, that was student-led. All of the students participated in the assembly and sang to our Veterans. Thank you to all of our staff who helped plan the event.
On Thursday, November 21st. All of our students will participate in Junior Achievement Day. Students from Rolling Meadows High School will lead activities that foster work-readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills. We look forward to this exciting learning opportunity.
Report cards will go home on Friday, November 22nd.
We look forward to seeing all of our families for parent-teacher conferences on Monday, November 25th and Tuesday, November 26th.
Each CRS student participated in an all school read aloud and All are Welcome Family bulletin board. Central Road invited three community members to read aloud the story, All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman to our students. Mr. Jim, bus driver from route 04; Ms. Kathy, Central Road’s crossing guard; and Mr. Courtney, School Resource Officer, participated in the read aloud. The message from the lesson is; everyone is welcome at Central Road. Families are also a part of our school community. We would like to invite families to send in photos that include family members and students for us to display. Please send in photos with your child or you can email them to centralroadschool@gmail.com and we would be happy to print them for you. All are welcome, at Central Road Elementary.
Please help us display your family and send in your photos soon, so we can include your family photo on the bulletin board as part of our warm, loving and welcoming school.
Student Leadership will be running a Holiday Food Drive beginning this Monday, November 18th through Friday, December 6th
The 5 Essentials Survey window for parents is open. The Parent Survey will be conducted from October 24, 2019, through February 14, 2020. You may take the survey at any time by visiting https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and selecting the appropriate survey to begin. The survey provides our school with important information. The results are directly correlated with our school ESSA rating. Please consider completing the survey. We need at least 20% of our parents to complete the survey online. Thank you in advance for participating. We will have computers available during parent/teacher conferences at Central Road for your convenience.
This is the last newsletter prior to Thanksgiving Break. My newsletters will resume after the holiday break.
I am thankful for being a part of such a fabulous school! I hope your family has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
Let's make it a great week!
Warmest regards,
Patti Van Winkle
Principal
D15’s Inquiry-based Social Studies Curriculum Engages Students
District 15 is approaching teaching history through a lens of civic responsibility, cultural awareness and inquiry. Learning about history not only builds literacy skills, but it also allows students to think deeply about themselves, how to learn from the experiences of others, and how to have an impact on their communities. Students are engaged through inquiry-based learning and interactive experiences that encourage them to become a part of the history they are studying.
All D15’s social studies programs incorporate rigorous literacy standards, as well as provide resources for teachers to differentiate for students who need enrichment and/or remediation.
At the elementary level, D15 introduced the TCI History Alive program for grades K-6 students beginning with the 2018-19 school year. Each grade level has an overarching theme: K - Me & My World; 1st - My School & Family; 2nd - My Community; 3rd - Our Community & Beyond; 4th - Regions of Our Country; 5th - America's Past; and 6th - History/The Ancient World.
The lessons invite students to engage and interact with the content. For example, a fifth-grade lesson includes a group activity where students are asked to identify physical features of the Indian subcontinent and explain how geography influenced the location of early settlement in India.
D15 also continues to support our teachers as these new curriculum materials are introduced, through in-person professional development opportunities and ongoing curricular support.

District 15’s Inclement Weather Protocols
As we enter the winter season, we want to remind families of District 15 families of the district’s emergency closing protocol. The school district takes the responsibility of deciding to close schools very seriously, and will only close in the event of extremely inclement weather.
If school is canceled, that decision is made by 5 a.m. You will be notified of the closure in a variety of ways:
Phone, Text, and Email—District 15 will send a message to all parents through a voice call, text message and email. Please ensure your contact information listed in the Infinite Campus is accurate. If you have changes you'd like to make to your personal contact information, please log into the Parent Portal and adjust your contact information.
Website—If classes are canceled due to inclement weather, an announcement will be posted on ccsd15.net and all of our school websites.
Social Media—School closures will be posted on the district’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
Radio and TV—Should a snow day be called, District 15 will inform television and radio stations.
For more information on emergency school closures and severe cold response plans, please visit our website.

Fundraiser Update: Currently, we raised $7,760 out of our $15,000 goal. We need your help! Without enough funds, we cannot plan and pay for more fun events like Fun Fair. Or we need to do more fundraisers throughout the year. It is not too late to still participate. You can still turn in your ticket stubs and they will be added into the next drawing. If you would like more tickets or have questions about the fundraiser, please contact Callie Sealock (cmsealock@gmail.com) or Jackie Manola (jackie.m.manola@gmail.com).
