Thursday’s “dialer” Message ended up being a lot different than the one I had recorded earlier that day. Instead of praising your students for being super engaged during our planned Code Red Drill and Prime Time Tabletop Scenario discussions (with a quick note about Progress Reports), I had to delete that message and record a troubling one. Several of you have told me that you could “tell by my voice” that the unannounced drill and its aftermath had affected me as well as many of our kids.
As you now know, the district has halted these “surprise” drills until they can get more input and feedback from our school sites. Bidwell Staff is meeting with district leadership on Thursday (10/4) at 3:00 in the library to provide feedback on the unannounced
drill. Thank you for communicating your students’ reactions to the drill to the district with your thoughtful letters, emails, and phone calls. I also communicated to district leadership our concerns after I arrived home on Thursday evening. In my feedback, I emphasized how tabletop discussions provide students with “real” experience responding to an emergency situation without the trauma that comes from being “surprised”. Again, I was so proud of how seriously our kids participated in those discussions on Thursday. Without a doubt, the discussions contributed to our students’ and staff’s lightening fast response to the “unannounced” drill. I’m not trying to justify the unannounced drill; I just want to emphasize that our school knows what to do in the event of the unthinkable—and we don’t need “surprises” to prove it.
I was also proud of how so many students and staff bounced back on Friday. I spent much of the day checking in with students and staff whom I knew had been particularly affected by the surprise drill. At lunch, it seemed like the kids were particularly “present” with one another and with me. Some were being extra silly—in the lightest sense of that word. Like they just wanted to go back to being kids.
Finally, please continue to check in with your students regarding the surprise drill. If it feels like we “really went through something”—it’s because we did. Kids react differently in similar circumstances. Sometimes, it won’t sink in until later. Please know that our staff is here and available any time your family needs support. We don’t take lightly what happened on Thursday. You have my word that I will do whatever I can to help ensure that no other school has to go through what the Bidwell Family endured on Thursday.
Respectfully,
