Commitment to Excellence 11/4/16

3rd/4th grade collaboration day

At the beginning of this week third and fourth-grade teachers came together for a grade level collaboration meeting at the District Office. Collaboration encourages and shares innovative thinking and offers teachers support from one another. Each teacher shared suggestions, techniques, and creative ideas, as well as discussed ways to troubleshoot challenges. Helene Monier- Lemnah presented an art integration workshop to the group that included multiple techniques to integrate dancing, theater, painting and other art forms into English Language lessons. The pictures below depict just a few of the methods. The teachers explored the integration of theater by using the text out of a leveled reader provided by the new ELA curriculum, to create tableaux (still, living "pictures") showing the history of the Olympic Games. Additionally, dance and movement were brought into a vocabulary lesson, through the use of body movements, gestures, and group repetition to describe words ending in suffixes – y, -ous, and less. Each exercise promotes students' engagement and retention of the material, as well as, teaches them basic elements of each art form.
