South Ridge Elementary fourth graders form bond with Highgate Senior Living Center residents
A group of children walks into Highgate Senior Living Center, chatting excitedly in anticipation of meeting the residents there for the first time. But this field trip is exciting for another reason as well: it marks a welcome return to a long-running friendship between Vancouver’s Highgate Senior Living Center and Ridgefield School District’s South Ridge Elementary School.
Over the last few years, Karen Moses and her fourth grade classes were able to spend time with residents of Highgate Senior Living Center. Sometimes the students went to visit them, and sometimes the residents came to visit the school. Together, they enjoyed treats and meals, celebrated holidays, and built friendships. But when COVID restrictions started in the spring of 2020, in-person visits were put on pause as health and safety became the highest priority. While students were still able to meet with their friends from time-to-time via Zoom, it wasn’t quite the same. Read more on the South Ridge Elementary School website.
Jackie Amundson is a lifelong Spudder and loyal fan of RHS Athletics
A lot has changed in Ridgefield over the past 60-plus years, but one thing has remained a near constant: Jackie Amundson and her husband, Randy, cheering on their beloved Spudders from the stands. Jackie graduated from RHS in 1959 alongside about 60 of her classmates. Back then, her name was Jackie Benedict, and her family’s Ridgefield roots run deep. “I have always been proud to be a Spudder,” Amundson said. “I was born at Muffet’s Maternity House right here in Ridgefield, and have lived here almost all my life.”
Jackie’s dad was a Ridgefield city councilman for over 30 years, and he and her uncle both worked as contractors in the small town. “Back then, there weren’t very many buildings or houses downtown that the two of them didn’t build or repair,” she said. “In fact, my husband and I even got married in a church that my dad and uncle built.” Read more on the RHS website.

Families with low or no income can file for the $3,000 Child Tax Credit
This year, more families and individuals with low or no incomes across Washington could get thousands of dollars in federal payments due to policy changes - even if they have never filed taxes before. To get this money, eligible families can file a simplified tax return in 15 minutes or less. It is estimated that at least 46,000 children in Washington could miss out on $3,000 each with the Child Tax Credit. More information can be found at getctc.org.
