First Graders are "Over the Moon" About Learning!
Ms. McGroarty and Mrs. Lukas' classes learned about the moon this week! They have been reading fiction and non-fiction texts about the moon, as well as practicing their reading skills with "The Moon Game" shared reading poem. Then their classes teamed up for "Oreo Moon Madness," a STEM activity where the students carved the cream from Oreo cookies to mimic the different phases of the moon. The students thoroughly enjoyed learning about the moon phases with this activity and eating their "moons" upon the completion of the lesson!

This week students had an opportunity to participate in a collaborative STEM project with Mrs. Harte during computer class and Mrs. Cavileer in the library. The students used various sources to research information about spiders. In the culminating activity, the students used the engineering process to build spider webs.
Writer's Workshop is Underway
Davenport students have had the opportunity to start working through the writing process using "Writer's Workshop," which is connected to "Reader's Workshop," a curriculum that the school has already been using in a big way. Students have enjoyed the process so far and are proud as they begin to see themselves as authors.

Davenport Celebrates American Education Week
This week Davenport celebrated American Education Week. American Education Week presents all Americans with the opportunity to celebrate public education and honor the educators who work very hard for our students each and every day. As a part of American Education Week, parents and guardians were invited to the school on Wednesday to observe their students in their classrooms in order to see the educators in action. We thank everyone who took the time to visit the school and recognize the undeniable importance of education.
