Semicolons and strategies to support an essay
Semicolons
-Semicolons separate a series of phrases of clauses. (containing commas)
-Separate 2 independent clauses (conjunctive adverb present)
Examples:
;similarly,
;consequently,
;therefore,
;also,
4 Strategies to Support and Essay
-providing an interpretation of a statement
-clarifying a general statement with examples
-furthering an argument with information and logical reasoning
-quoting an expert on the issues
Effective opening, transitional, and closing sentences:
Opening-introduce the reader to the overall purpose of the paragraph/essay
Transitional- like the different ideas in a composition together, contributing to the development and flow of the essay
Concluding- summarize the ideas that are presented in the paragraph/essay
