Pendry's Peek
A Look at Some of What's Happening in Grade One
Positive, Productive, and Safe
Students who do not follow positive, productive, and safe expectations meet with the teacher to talk about their behavior. When misbehavior continues or is unsafe, students complete a Positive Action Behavior Think Sheet. The student and teacher have a conversation about the occurrence and the sheet comes home for a parent signature.
Positive reinforcement and logical consequences are our goals to help children make choices that best help them and their classmates to learn in a safe environment.
Reading and Writing
I have met with some students in small reading groups. I'm hoping to be able to start sending books home soon. You could help by returning these books in their bags the very next day - whether or not you had a chance to read with your child.
We have had a couple of writing workshops! The kids wrote a little bit about what they did over the Labor Day weekend. They are learning to use a spelling strategy to make a best attempt at spelling unknown words. You can practice this at home! Say the word "ice cream", stretch the sounds /i/ /s/ /k/ /r/ /e/ /m/, write the sounds you hear. The letters written between the slashes represent the sound, not the actual letter. When kids write the sounds they hear, they are beginning to understand that letters represent sounds. They are also learning to focus on the story they want to tell and not spending forever trying to spell a word. Spelling is a developmental process. I like to compare it to how we taught our kids to talk. When they were learning to say "hamburger" we didn't correct their attempt of "hangeber"! We chuckle and think it's cute and know that they won't pronounce it that way forever! Same with spelling - I promise, they will learn to spell correctly - just not immediately.
