Chapter 3: Conducting Direct Instruction Lessons
Element 8: Recording and Representing Content
The final element important to direct instruction lessons involves providing students with opportunities to record and represent the content that has been the focus of the lesson. The end goal of such activities is that students create an internal representation of the content--students encode the content in ways that are personally meaningful. There are two basic ways to encode information: linguistically (like written summary) and nonlinguistically (like graphic organizers & pictorial models). Strategies within this element appear in table 3.3. When strategies in this element produce the desired effects, teachers will observe the following behaviors in students.
- Students produce summaries that include critical information.
- Students produce nonlinguistic representation that include critical information.
- Students can explain their linguistic and nonlinguistic representations.
- Students remember the critical content from previous lessons.
