Writing
It's hard to believe we are about two and a half weeks away from our Famous Hoosier Wax Museum. Students are either done or very close to being done with Chapter 1 and turning it into their speech. The challenge that we have run into is that I have made comments on each paper with information that needs to be added or corrected. Students checked their names off the board when they felt they were done, but as I've been doing what I had hoped would be a final conference, very few students have made the corrections I asked them to make. I gave them one more hour in class today to go back in and make sure they had edited their paper to the best of their ability and that is what I will be grading. Some of the paper still need a little bit of work to be ready to be made into a speech. I asked students to go over their paper with a parent tonight to make sure necessary edits had been completed. Just for your reference, each paper should contain 5 paragraphs:
Childhood: This should contain information about when/where they were born, family, interests (especially if those interests led to the reason they were famous), etc.
Early Adulthood: For most Famous Hoosiers, this includes college and any events that led them to the beginning of their career or activity that they are famous for.
Why the Famous Hoosier is Famous: This should contain information leading up to and including the peak of their career.
Because They Were Famous: This should contain information about things that resulted from their fame. It can include awards, additional opportunities (such as books written about them, TV appearances, etc.), or philanthropic opportunities.
Today: If the Famous Hoosier is still alive, this should include where they live and what they do. If the Famous Hoosier has died, this should include when they died and any memorials, scholarships, or events held in their honor.
As soon as I feel like chapter 1 is ready to go, you should see a speech come home! A handful of students already have speeches ready to go.
Language Arts
Wordly Wise: Wordly Wise 14 C & D will be due Thursday. The unit 14 test will be on 4/28.
Words Their Way: WTW Quiz Friday.
Reading
We will be finishing up our figurative language unit this week with some close reading and application of what we've learned.
Math
We will be starting unit 7 in math this week. Topics covered will include U.S. liquid conversions (gallons, pints, quarts, cups), fraction multiplication, and fractions as multiples.
Science
We will spend this week working on a catapult project. Tomorrow, students will be designing a catapult that is able to launch a piece of popcorn at least 12 inches. They will be using materials found in our classroom and possibly materials that they have at home. I left in my sub plans that no one should be planning for their parents to go to the store for this project.
Indiana State Museum Chaperones
We could also use some chaperones for this field trip. I currently have 1 chaperone signed up. I can take three more at the $5.50 rate. Any additional chaperones are welcome to attend, but will need to pay the full admission of $16.75. If you would like to chaperone, you should be willing to:
-Ride the bus to and from the museum.
-Supervise a small group of students throughout the museum.
-Refrain from purchasing food from the concession stand or visiting the gift shop.
Famous Hoosiers Wax Museum
-May 9: Famous Hoosier Dress Rehearsal. Students should come to school with their full costume and speech memorized. We will spend a good portion of our day listening to each student present his/her speech. If you haven't started thinking about a costume, don't wait too long!
-May 10: Famous Hoosier Wax Museum. Students will have about half an hour to change and get ready after lunch. They will present to other classes from 2:00-2:30 and parents from 2:30-3:00.
-If you have not already sent back your bright orange transportation form, please make sure I have that by May 5 so all students get home safely!
