Math- This week we finished composing numbers up to 19 and even used the candy Smarties to help us. Our next unit focuses on decomposing numbers 11-19. We will use double ten-frames to do this. An example of the number sentence used in decomposing 11 would be: 11=10+1.

Religion- The kindergartners learned about another of Jesus' miracles in last week's Promise magazine. Jesus filled his friends' nets with lots of fish when no fish had been caught. The students learned about being good friends and helping others.

Language Arts- The students are finishing up their learning of the letter "N" in the SUPERKIDS workbook and will move onto letter "M" as part of the series.

Valentine's Cards:

We would ask our parents to send in Valentine's cards for the entire class. Please look for instructions from each teacher as to how to address the cards (To and From information) for the students. Teachers will be sending out a separate note directly to the class or it will be sent through the room parent regarding how Valentine's cards should be addressed to each student in the class. Look for this week's Tic Tac Toe Sheet which will also have instructions on how to complete Valentine's Day cards for kindergarten.

All Valentine's cards should be delivered to the classroom by Wednesday, February 10th. Please have your child bring a labeled bag to class with the Valentine's Day items in the bag. We will celebrate Valentine's Day in each classroom on Thursday, February 11th, 2016.

"It is written: You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve." Luke 4. 1 - 13

This week's Sunday Gospel will address the temptation of Jesus by the devil. Jesus was led to the desert by the holy Spirit and embarked on a journey of 40 days of fasting. While Jesus was in the desert, the devil unsuccessfully tried to tempt Jesus and test his will to prove to the devil he was the Son of God. Jesus rejected the devil's attempts to sway him and the devil eventually left the desert when Jesus did not waiver in his beliefs.

Mercy Challenge- In keeping with the spirit of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, we encourage our parents to think about the following Works of Mercy during the upcoming week:

Corporal Work of Mercy:
  • Clothe the naked

Spiritual Work of Mercy:

  • Counsel the doubtful (to give advice to those who need it)

These are simple acts of Mercy each of us can strive for in our daily lives.

Thank you to all of our parents and caregivers who organized and participated in our Chinese New Year Celebration last Friday. The children learned how to make red lanterns, decorative firecrackers and sampled potstickers. For a Chinese New Year treat, all three classrooms had a chance to make dessert spring rolls. A fun time was had by all!
