FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Davis Families,
The last few weeks have been action packed, with plenty of learning going on in the classrooms and several activities out of the classroom. Last week alone, we enjoyed a variety of school wide events, including the Davis Family Fund Run, Grandparents Luncheon, and Spring Fling. We were glad to see a great turnout at each of these, and were especially pleased to see students enjoying themselves so much! In the midst of the school wide events, we also had a huge project taking place where some of our WatchDOGS dads put together new tables for all of our fifth grade classrooms. We are so thankful for the help from moms, dads, and friends of Davis who put in countless volunteer hours to coordinate these events, work on special projects, and do the many things that make Davis a better place for children!
This week, we celebrate Counselor and Librarian Appreciation Week. As our school Counselor, Maja McElveen has many different roles on campus, all of which involve supporting students, staff, and families in some way. As Librarian, Lauren Meyer also wears many hats as she coordinates much more than programs associated with the library. We are fortunate to have Ms. McElveen and Ms. Meyer enriching the lives of Davis students and contributing so much to our school community. Please take time this week to recognize them and show your appreciation in some way.
Thanks to the many parents who participated in the Are you greener than a 5th grader? contest, sponsored by the Hispanic Austin Leadership’s (HAL) Environmental Sustainability Team in partnership with the City of Austin. Participants earned points as they engaged in sustainability activities. It was a great way to raise awareness of the impact we can each make just by doing simple things like recycling and turning off lights when we leave a room. We are thrilled to announce that Davis won the contest, and our school will receive a retrofit water refill station as grand prize! There will be an event next month with Mayor Adler, where Davis will be recognized for this distinction.
As we plan for next year, we need your help in preparing for all students. Parents must complete the online registration process through the AISD Parent Cloud for students who will be returning next school year. We plan for staffing allocations and class placement based on students who are registered online. Right now, we still need over 400 parents to complete this process for their child. See the information below for more information on how to register online.
With only seven weeks of school remaining, there is still plenty of teaching and learning left to cover. Over the next few weeks, we will enjoy several PBL showcases, and some grade levels will be kicking off a new PBL unit. In May, all students will be immersed in ocean learning with our MARE study, where each grade level learns about a different part of the ocean. This year, MARE study will incorporate PBL as well. It's an exciting time of year, and we look forward to celebrating the many student successes that we know will occur in these next couple of months.
Thank you all for being a part of Davis!

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION LUNCHEON
Don’t Miss the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on April 26!
The Staff at Davis Elementary cordially invites all volunteers to attend a luncheon in the gymnasium on April 26 between the hours of 10:30AM and 1:00pm. This is our way of saying “Thank You” for all you do for us. Please come during your child’s designated lunch time so you can eat with your child’s teacher and other volunteers from the class. This luncheon is for the adults and is not intended for your child, however children too young for school are welcome to join us.
Mark your calendars. We hope to see you there.
ACTION REQUIRED: ONLINE REGISTRATION 2016-2017
Online Registration is now open for 2016-2017. Parents will need to log in to their AISD Parent Cloud account (my.austinisd.org) to enroll their child for the 2016-2017 school year. We currently have less than 200 students registered online for next year. Students will not be assigned a class until the online registration process is complete. Information can be found at https://www.austinisd.org/technology/parents-guardians/student-registration on the AISD website.
