D34 Board Meetings: Virtual for Now
Superintendent's Reflections
He acknowledged that people are curious about what school will look like in the fall and that, in the absence of specific guidance from the state, there is a lot of speculation. He explained that there are a few things we do know that will guide our decisions:
- Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker's Restore Illinois plan establishes five phases to reopen the state. It calls for schools to reopen in phase four.
- The Centers for Disease Control issued a three-phase approach to reopening the country and guidance for reopening schools. He pointed to the many complexities of this plan.
He stressed that the District's first priority in all decisions is the safety of students and staff.
Resolutions
In addition, the Board authorized a public notice of a public hearing on the District's Remote Learning Plan. The public hearing will be held virtually on June 22, 2020 at 7:30pm. Community members who wish to participate in the public hearing should email Cathy Kedjidjian (ckedjidjian@glenview34.org) by June 22, 2020 at 6pm for login information.

Discussion
E-Learning (Remote Learning) Update
- "E" implies 'electronic" and, particularly moving forward, the lessons and activities that comprise the District's teaching and learning when schools are closed will not all come in electronic form.
- "Remote Learning" aligns with the Illinois State Board of Education's (ISBE's) terminology in their requirement for school districts to submit remote learning plans.
He shared that in grades preschool-5, students have submitted 67,425 attendance forms as of Friday, yielding a 70% attendance rate. (This is an optional step the District uses to gauge attendance and engagement.) While the district strives for a higher number, the national average for remote learning is 50%.
Executive Director for Instructional Innovation Brian Engle described the current work to assemble a staff team made up of representatives from every building, grade and subject area to prepare for what remote learning would look like in the fall if we are unable to return to in-person learning. He stressed that starting a school year in a remote learning environment is very different than ending a year that way and the team will consider the needs of students and staff for social-emotional learning, professional development, support, etc.
Summer School
Dr. Silverman said that based on what he has seen from the Summer Learning Team, the free, open-to-all, Tier 1 program will be very compelling for students to participate. The team's first parameter in developing the program is that learning should be fun.
