Family Message - September 25th, 2021

Good morning Stanwood Middle School Families!

We have completed 16 days of school and we hope that all of our students and families are getting into positive and productive routines! We knew it would be a difficult start to our year, and it has been with all the new procedures and changes, but our families and staff at Stanwood Middle School have worked hard to persevere and I can't tell you how proud I am of everyone! I get to see all of our students and staff on a daily basis doing great things and it is amazing to watch!

We wanted to share what your students are hearing daily from us during announcements. This month our focus is on the character trait of Kindness and we are focused on asking students to think before they speak.

Is it:

We've been giving out character dares and talking about kindness in the morning through our daily words of wisdom. Each day Ms. Christmas reminds our Spartans that "the choices you make today, shape your world tomorrow."

6th Grade T-shirts

Our class of 2028 got their new shirts on Friday, just in time for Spartan Fridays to start!

Cookie Dough Fundraiser

Speaking of our amazing PTO, who provides each student with a new Spartan shirt, we have just two weekends left for our cookie dough fundraiser. Our goal is 2,000 boxes--we are almost at 400 sold. Thank you for your support!

Fall Assessment Season is Here!

This past week all students did MAPs testing in Math classes. Next week is MAPs testing in ELA classes. We will have a brief break, and then do fall SBA testing in Math, ELA and sixth grade Science. Students will test during their classes.

Our teams hit the road this week. If your Spartan is participating in sports, you received an email regarding transporting your athlete to away competitions. Please let us know if you need more information regarding this.

Also, next Friday is the first official grade check of the sports season. Students with failing grades will not be able to participate starting the week of October 4.

Skyward and Grades

All students have grades in Skyward. Advisory teachers are working with all students to develop strategies to help students make up work, turn work in on time, and reach out for help when needed. Please encourage your Spartan to make up work and communicate with teachers when they need help in school. All teacher emails are listed below for you!

Picture Retakes - October 22

If you missed picture day, October 22 is our retake day.

Our bus to the YMCA has started. Students must bring a parent note (or have parents call the office) to get a pass for the bus. This will be a permanent pass and only one note or phone call is needed.

Our wonderful PTO helped by paying to have water bottle filling stations placed around the school a few years ago. Please have your student bring their refillable water bottles to school and use them often.

Please contact us if you have any questions, 360.629.1350.

Have a great weekend!

Hello Families,

As we head into the final week of September, I thought it might be helpful to share some school-wide statistics with you. Our fall enrollment is up from previous years; we are serving nearly 40 more students than we projected last spring. This is good news for us! Growth within the school district offers potential for expanded programming, more variety in class offerings, and allows us to employ more teachers, kitchen staff, bus drivers, para educators, and more. We are honored to serve your students each day, and appreciate your partnership in the education of your children.

Listening Sessions with the Superintendent
I will be hosting listening sessions throughout the year to provide an opportunity for parents, community members, students, and staff to provide input, ideas, and their perspective about our schools. The first session will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, over Zoom. The Zoom link can be found on the District Calendar. There will be other listening sessions on November 30, 2021, February 22, 2022, and May 31, 2022. Please refer to the District Calendar for details.

Staff Recognition Program
To show appreciation for certificated and classified employees, the Board of Directors looks forward to continuing the district’s staff recognition program for the 2021-22 school year. We are proud that our staff goes above and beyond for the children in the Stanwood-Camano School District.

Nominations for a Certificated or Classified Employee of the Month are accepted September through March for recognition by the board, administration, and our sponsors. All monthly award recipients will be considered for the Certificated and Classified Employee of the Year awards presented in May. Nominations are welcome from parents, community members, peers, administrators, and students.

If you would like to nominate a staff member and share personal examples of the dedication, commitment and passion this individual has portrayed working for the Stanwood-Camano School District, please visit our Staff Recognition Program page on the website. Please use personal examples of why you believe this individual deserves recognition and share how they inspire you and others. Heritage Bank sponsors our employee recognition program in partnership with Stanwood and Camano Island area businesses.

Stanwood YMCA
We are proud of our partnership with the Stanwood YMCA. It may be of interest to you the many programs that the YMCA and the school district offers to families. Although most look different right now, here is a snapshot of how the YMCA helps to serve the students and families in our community.

The YMCA offers daily youth and teen programs after school and on the weekends that provide peer interaction for children in our community. Many of our students have been socially isolated for various pandemic and quarantine reasons. The YMCA is pleased to work with individuals and families of various income levels who may need financial assistance to participate in YMCA programs and activities.

Stop by the YMCA to check out the new Teen Room that is open every day after school, 2:30-6pm. Or go to the pool to watch our age-group swim teams practice to see the fun interaction of kids learning new skills in team sports.

The YMCA offers licensed care (both in Stanwood and on Camano Island) that provides students with homework help, enrichment activities and mental health counselors, for families that need after school care for their children. Please connect with your child’s school to see what options are available to you.

Information from previous Family Messages below:

Lunches are based on fourth period classes. If a student has 4A on their schedule, then they will have lunch before fourth period. If a student has 4B on their schedule, then they will have lunch after fourth period.

Teachers with first lunch:

ten Hoopen

Teachers with second lunch:

A reminder that all 8th grade students will eat in the West Gym. Seventh graders will eat in the cafeteria for the first half of their lunch while sixth graders go outside and enjoy some free time. Half way through the lunch period, sixth graders will come into the cafeteria to eat lunch.

Stanwood Middle School PTO

Our PTO is an amazing group of people working together to support our students. From fundraisers to activities, their work helps our Spartans engage, connect, and thrive at Stanwood Middle School. Please like their Facebook page for all the up-to-date information about our school--and get ready for a great fundraiser coming this September!
