Mandan Indians

  • lived in earth lodges
  • farmed corn
  • were amenable to trade with the Americans

Titon Sioux Indians

  • slept in teepees
  • hunted bufalo
  • guarded their territory fiercely and hunted anyone who tried to pass through it

The Main Leaders of the Corps of Discovery

Osage Indians

  • hunted small game such as deer, elk, bear, and bison
  • women and children would gather plants and firewood when men would hunt
  • located near the Misourri and Osage rivers

Blackfeet Indians

  • live in teepees
  • eat buffalo and gathered vegetables and fruits
  • attacked by American Troops in 1870, know as the Marais Massacre

Traveling Against the Current

During the expedition, the Corps of Discovery had to follow the Missouri River. Since the started in St. Louis, they had to go up-stream for most of the trip. This was hard, especially with all of the supplies they had to carry.

To the West Coast

The expedition had to travel towards the Lolo Trail, in mid-September, already being covered in snow. They rode on many different rivers until they reached the West Coast, there they built Fort Clatsop. They arrived in early November, and spent the winter there, preparing for the journey back home.

"Pompy's Tower"

On the journey home, Clark discovered an unusually large stone formation on the Yellow River. He names it "Pompy's Tower" after Sacagawea's son's nickname. On the formation, Clark left the engraving, " Wm. Clark July 25th 1806", and it can still be seen to this day,
