Mr. Taylor's Sunday Reminders for the week of April 9
Good Evening Winston Churchill Families!
This is your principal, Mr. Taylor, with your announcements and reminders for the week of April 9th. We hope that everyone had a safe and restful Spring Break. As a reminder, Monday, April 10th, is a school holiday, and schools and offices will be closed. We look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday for a busy week.
On Wednesday we will have a slightly modified schedule so that all students can complete the MD State Survey on school culture and climate. This is important information that the school will use to create and modify school procedures and programs. Students are reminded that they will need to bring their charged MCPS Chromebook to complete the survey. WCHS Parent/Student Communication: Maryland School Survey
Parents and students we need your help! WCHS policy is that only authorized Seniors may leave campus during the school day at lunch. We have seen an increase in underclassmen leaving campus and this is not allowed due to unsafe and problematic behaviors that can and have occurred. Students may use the outside locations in the courtyards and behind the cafeteria, but may not leave campus. ID's will be checked, so Seniors leaving campus must have their student ID's. Security and administration will be assigning detention to students late to 6th period in the hallway so please ensure you are on campus and on time to class. Parents please help us maintain a safe school environment by reinforcing this rule with your students.
On Friday, seniors will be participating in the annual Senior Day, with breakfast provided by the PTSA, an important presentation on Senior Events, a fun filled afternoon at Smokey Glen Farms and the senior class picture. Also on Friday, the Senior Showcase presentation of The Last Five Years, will have a one time performance in the auditorium starting at 7 pm, with proceeds going to charity. Full information is in the weekly email.
Students: are you interested in serving on the SGA? Information sessions for students running for SGA office are this week. Find out all the information in the weekly email.
Save the Date: The ongoing WCHS Culture and Equity Discussion series will continue with a special program to discuss the Asian American experience at Winston Churchill. Families and students are invited to attend on the evening of April 25, at the school.
Parents and families - The Winston Churchill Local Summer School information is here. In the weekly email you can find dates, course descriptions, and a Google Form to sign up and show your interest. Spots will be limited, so don't delay in signing up.
Parents, we are looking for volunteers to be a part of the leadership of our PTSA. The nominating committee is seeking candidates for several open positions for next school year. If you are interested in helping out, the interest form is in the weekly email.

Addressing Hate and Bias Incidents - No Place For Hate
We continue to address and confront incidents of hate and bias at Winston Churchill and across the county. WCHS is committed to being a No Place For Hate school, and will continue to have PRIDE lessons, discussions and activities to promote an anti-hate and anti-bias culture. If you haven't yet, I strongly encourage all families to read the MCPS message on antisemitism and hate, and discuss your expectations with your child. If you experience Hate or Bias, or observe it happening - please don't hesitate in reporting it to administration and the school. Only by working together can we stamp hate and bullying as a school.

Exciting news from the media center corner!
Greetings! I saw this quote recently and it has stuck with me: “A free society should freely read.” We have over 14,000 books in the media center. Not every book is going to fill every need, but it is important that our students see themselves reflected in the books they read and have available to them in the media center. We are all different and unique in our own way so, that’s quite an undertaking, but we are trying to create just such a collection. I’d like to share some data with you regarding the diversity of our collection. Since winter break, we have added 355 books total. 129 of those books, both fiction and non-fiction, are diverse-themed. 42% of our new fiction additions are diverse-themed. If your student has a book suggestion for the media center, please have them share it with media staff. If it’s not already approved, we are happy to put it through MCPS’ approval process and add it to our collection.

Parking and Traffic Reminders for WCHS
Drop-Off and Pick-Up - Please be careful and respectful during drop off and pick up each day. MPD traffic division will be out issuing citations for illegal driving and parking. WCHS Updated traffic and drop-off and pick up zones

Traffic congestion can be bad, especially as we head into colder weather and rainy or inclement weather. Please do not drop off your student in traffic on Gainsborough, Tuckerman or Victory - as this can lead to unsafe conditions.
Visitor Parking
We ask our visitors to use the NEW Visitor parking lot by the flagpole near the main entrance. Please do not park in the other lots as they are designated and assigned to specific staff and students.
Student Parking
Student parking is limited to seniors that have been approved for and picked up a parking permit. School permitted areas, which require the parking permit, include both the school lots and the surrounding streets. Any student who parks in the school lot or on the surrounding streets without an approved permit displayed may be subject to ticketing or towing. The Amplifier, Montgomery County's student-led magazine. Last year, came out with two editions: one in January and the other in June. The latter was 100 pages and had writing from students in 14 schools across Montgomery County. This year, our goal is to get involvement from all 26 Montgomery County high schools - including writers, artists, and editors. We would love to get your school involved, so please spread the word of this opportunity amongst your students. Attached is a flier with a QR code that directs students to a form for signing up to be a writer, editor, or artist for the Amplifier. Attached below is a google form that students can use to submit writing pieces for a section of the magazine.

FalconVision Tutoring, is a student-run tutoring branch under the nonprofit Family Learning Solutions (FLS), and based in Poolesville High. As an organization, we’re dedicated to helping students succeed academically through direct sessions (online and free!) with our well-qualified tutors, over both the school year and/or summer. COVID SAFETY REMINDERS and 22-23 UPDATES FOR OUR COMMUNITY:
- If you do test positive, please continue to report your status by using the MCPS COVID REPORTING FORM
Do not come to school if sick. With COVID cases and variants still occurring, it is important to not report to school if your student has any signs of illness. In addition to the standard COVID symptoms (cough, fever, loss of taste and smell), signs of illness include: sore or scratchy throat, running nose, headache, chills and body aches. If your child has any of these symptoms, please keep them home until it can be confirmed they do not have COVID-19.
Wear an enhanced mask/face covering. All students and staff will be allowed to choose whether to wear a mask while in school. If you have concerns about exposure or immune levels, we recommend to wear a mask. In some cases, students returning from quarantine will be required to wear masks for certain periods. Masks will continue to be available on-site for those that need them.
Practice good hand and health hygiene. Wash hands frequently with soap and water, use hand sanitizer when soap and water is unavailable. Do not cough or sneeze around others or into your hands. Dispose of any tissue or items used for cough, sneezing or nasal use.
Vaccinate, and also get a Booster if you can. DHHS has now approved boosters for age 5 and up. You can find out more at the DHHS Vaccination Website: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/covid19/vaccine/
