Curriculum Corner
We will continue our WTW and vocabulary routine until the week of March 18. We will not do spelling or vocabulary the week before spring break. When we return from spring break, we will be busy finishing up our Hoosier Exhibition projects and completing NWEA and ILEARN.
We also have been studying figurative language, including similes, metaphors, allusion, hyperboles, personification, idioms, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and oxymorons. We will take an assessment over identifying figurative language on Thursday, 3/21.
Writing:
Hoosier Exhibition research is underway! We will be spending the next two weeks researching and composing our papers about our assigned topic. Research papers are due by March 28.
Science:
This week, we will be studying heat energy, how it transfers, and conductors and insulators. We will take a
Math:
We have begun unit 6 in math, which covers the topics of division, measuring angles, area and perimeter, and converting between tons, pounds, and ounces. This week we will be practicing finding missing side length of a rectangle, division strategies, partial quotients division, problem solving, and converting units of weight.
STEPS to SIEW:
This year, students will be participating in a new curriculum called Second Step. At Stonegate, we will be referring to it as "Steps to Strong In Every Way." Every Friday, students will be participating in a lesson focused on social-emotional learning. We will not have a Strong in Every Way lesson this week.

On Thursday, your child should have brought home two papers. One was green and is for you to fill out to give the middle school information about your child. The other was gray and is their music course selection sheet. Both of those are due on Thursday, 3/21.
On April 11 or 12, the music teachers will be coming to Stonegate. The choir teacher will sing with the kids and the band and orchestra teachers will help your child select an instrument.
If your child is feeling a bit nervous about the transition, I would suggest checking out the calendar and taking him/her to an event. I know there is a talent show coming up (called the Spectacular Spectacular) and lots of spring sporting events (track, tennis, baseball, softball).
ZWMS will be open on July 29, 30, and 31 for the kids to practice their locker combination and walk their schedule.
As you look toward meeting the 1:1 requirement for next year, below is the information about device purchase and rental.

Please let me know if you have any questions! I can probably answer many of them and would be happy to communicate with 5th grade counselor, Mrs. April Sanchez (asanchez@zcs.k12.in.us), if there is something I don't know.
Spring Fling
If you are able to volunteer, they are still looking for help to fill volunteer slots and give donations.
Day of Play
Hoosier Exhibition Project
We will have two days of class presentations where the kids will practice their presentation for the class. They will be expected to have everything prepared by April 17 and 18, so they will be ready for that presentation. On April 19, we will invite 3rd grade to come visit from 1:00-1:30 and parents from 1:30-2:00. You are welcome to take your child home with you after the event finishes or he/she can take his/her normal mode of transportation home.
Testing Information
Our first state testing is arriving soon! State guidelines mandate that all staff and students must not have access to smartphones, smartwatches, tablets during testing times. We must be void of any electronic device that could audio or video record and/or take photos. We highly recommend on these two dates + during future ILEARN testing dates that students do not wear or bring their smartwatches and/or smartphones/tablets.
However, if these items are worn or brought to school, we will ask students to remove these items and place them in a secure location. We will also ensure they are placed in a way that we can identify which electronics belong to which students.
As you can see, there are quite a few testing dates on our calendar. On the dates that you see CAT, that stands for Computer Adaptive Test. Those tests are similar to NWEA because they will increase and decrease in difficulty within the 4th grade standards as students get the problems correct or incorrect. The kids will have up to 3 days to finish that test, so they may or may not take all of the days. PT stands for Performance Task. Those will be the open-ended, written response questions. They will have unlimited time within the school day to finish those tasks. FF stands for Fixed Form. All students will have the same assessment and will have unlimited time within the school day to finish. If you could avoid appointments on those days, it would be much appreciated! If a student has an unavoidable appointment, please let me know before we begin testing that day.

Substitute Teachers Needed!
Attention all parents/guardians! Have you ever thought about getting paid for the time you spend at our school? Becoming a substitute teacher would do just that for you! Think of it as a paid volunteer position. You still get the opportunity to control your schedule and locations you work but have the added benefit of a little extra pocket money! If you are interested in this opportunity you may apply directly on the ZCS website or simply click here! You may also contact the subcoordinator (subcoordinator@zcs.k12.in.us ) for more information. Thank you!
