Citizens Working Together

Citizens should work together to make the rules/laws

Thesis

Citizens should be the ones to create the rules and the laws because they are a part of the community and they would know what the community would want and they should only be able to create the rules or laws.

Summary

"Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut and "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson exhibit the limits of government and tradition in society. Harrison rebelled because he was limited he was not allowed to show what he is fully capable of. In “The Lottery”, some of the people participating in the lottery did not agree with the tradition of killing people.

Quote and Analysis "The Lottery"

Quote: “They do say,’ Mr. Adams said to Old Man Warner, who stood next,' that over in the north village they're talking of giving up the lottery.' Old Man Warner snorted. 'Pack of crazy fools,' he said.' Listening to the young folks, nothing's good enough for them.''' (Jackson 3)

Analysis: This quote is important because it shows what happens when a law or rule is in place and what happens when that rule or law doesn’t want to be followed anymore. They don’t want they tradition in place anymore because they know it is a bad tradition.

Quote and Analysis "Harrison Bergeron"

Quote: "I am the Emperor!' cried Harrison. 'Do you hear? I am the Emperor! Everybody must do what I say at once!' He stomped his foot and the studio shook. 'Even as I stand here' he bellowed, 'crippled, hobbled, sickened- I am a greater ruler than any man who ever lived! Now watch me become what I can become!'''. (Vonnegut 3-4)

Analysis: This quote is important to the thesis because it shows what happens or what could happen if the government has this much power to restrict the community. . Citizens should have the choice to make laws or rules because most of the time it will be for the better of the good because they live within the community.

Conclusion

All citizens should have a word or input in laws or rules put in place for the community since they are a part of the community and the government shouldn't have a as much power as it already has. My fear is the upcoming elections, if Trump wins the election I am scared that he will run the country like a business because that is the only way he knows. I would like someone that would be able to run the country properly and that would listen to the people.
