My Favorite Thanksgiving tradition!

Traditions are fun here at Amana Elementary! We have had to make adjustments to some (parading past the retirement community instead of the classrooms during Halloween is one I think we should keep!). But one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES is the kindergarten writing activity, How To Roast A Turkey! Mrs. Hilton, only the very best kindergarten teacher in the entire world, who has a heart of Gold, and is without question the kindest person I have ever met, did the activity early this year, because, in her words, “I just have a feeling.” The writing is broken into six ideas: How long will you cook your turkey? What will you stuff your turkey with. How heavy is your turkey? How hot is your oven? How many legs does your turkey have? And the writing prompt, I like Thanksgiving because…

The ideas expressed bring me so much joy, I literally only read one or two at a time, spreading out the enjoyment as long as I can. And then, I get to share some with you! Enjoy.

Ms. Hattie is going to stuff her two legged 1 pound turkey with ham and cook for 2 minutes at 12°.

Will is going to cook his turkey for 4 hours and 1 day. He plans to stuff his turkey with black, yellow and brown (I love that imagery). Will also likes Thanksgiving because he likes Christmas (I agree with Will! Thanksgiving goes right into Christmas for the Macumbers!).

Ms. Mallory is going to stuff her 4 pound turkey with salt. Mallory also enjoys Thanksgiving because she likes to eat! (YES!)

Max is a little more practical with his 1,000 pound turkey, he’s going to stuff his with a bone (how else would it get there).

Ms. Chloe. I have seen a LOT of different times in my 13 years of enjoying this activity. But I have a first. Ms. Chloe is going to cook her turkey “until 6:00 o’clock” (I love that). She’s also going to stuff her turkey with candy. (Love it!).

Grayson is going to stuff his turkey with chicken nuggets (I’m not a huge turkey fan so I could get on board with the chicken nugget idea). Grayson likes Thanksgiving because he gets to jump in leaf piles (love that imagery!).

And so many more! The kinders then follow up with things they are thankful for. No surprise they write about being thankful for moms and dads. Brothers and sisters. Grandma and grandpas. Pets, food and even SCHOOL! Whatever Thanksgiving brings to your home, on behalf of all of us at Amana Elementary, we wish you all the very best now and always.

Classroom Snacks/Birthday Treats

Classroom Snacks must follow the Healthy Snack guidelines to meet the Smart Snack Requirements as set by USDA. No soda, candy and other such items are allowed.

Daily student snacks in the classroom will be brought in by the individual student for their own consumption. While we have no control over what that snack item may be, we ask that you help to provide a healthy snack option for your child.

Due to COVID19 restrictions, we are not allowing classroom snacks for special days such as birthdays, holidays, etc. be brought from home by the parent that do not meet the following standards:

  • 1. Item must be individually packaged for each student to open
  • 2. Item must meet Smart Snack Guidelines
  • 3. Item must not require refrigeration
  • 4. If Item is brought in from another source other than the school purchasing, it must be in its original bulk purchase box.**example if purchasing individual bags of popcorn from Costco that come packaged in a box or bag, the bag or box cannot be opened before coming into the school. It must come in as purchased. This includes a purchase made from any other store or source.

Items produced or made at home and then individually wrapped are not acceptable.

A parent or teacher or PTG group may purchase items from the CCA School Food Service Department via the attached Order Guide which was updated 9/2/2020. We understand that a classroom size is much smaller than the case count of most of these products. We cannot purchase partial cases from our Distributor. Suggestions are for the classrooms to combine orders and split the case. Or a parent may purchase a case and take the rest home for what is not needed that day and allow their family to consume.

Some things to remember:

  • Snacks orders need to be emailed or faxed to Debbie Klein, Food Service Director at or 319-828-4743 (FAX)
  • Snack orders need to be pre-paid before they are ordered, please write checks to "Clear Creek Amana Food Service"
  • Orders are due Mondays and delivered to appropriate school on Thursdays

BackPack Program

Through a partnership between HACAP and the CCA Community School District we are able to offer families a weekend food BackPack Program. The BackPack Program provides a small food bag of kid-friendly, non-perishable snacks for children each Friday and during school breaks. This is a FREE program, with no specific requirements that families must meet. It is also kept completely confidential – only the counselor will be aware of participating families. If the BackPack Program would be helpful for you and your children, please contact your building counselor or social worker.
