Language Arts
Theme was our focus this week. It is an underlying meaning or truth about life that is often revealed in a work of fiction. Sometimes the theme is revealed through the plot and event or can been seen through a particular character in a story. It is rarely stated in the text and as a reader, we need to figure it out.
We also have been understanding/interpreting a story by paying attention to the characters, plot, setting and a repeated object.
Informational writing strategies continued this week. Students are generating and narrowing down a topic and research will begin!
Spelling and grammar for the week;
- figurative language: idiom, metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia
- common and proper nouns
- synonyms
Math
We wrapped up our multiplication and division unit on fractions this week. Please take a look at these assessments in your child's Friday folder next week. If your child received a score lower than a 3 for a specific standard, they are able to take a retake assessment on that standard. However, your child needs to take on the responsibility to come see me during a recess time to complete this alternative assessment. Also, since some students aren't finished with the assessment, this grade will be recorded on Term 5.
This week, we also altered a ChexMix recipe from serving 24 to serving 4. Students enjoyed making this recipe in class! Take a look at the video below to see some of the highlights!
Social Studies & Science
We finished up our Social Studies unit on the Early English Settlements by taking the final assessment. You should be seeing those coming home next week.
Did you know that about 80% of the Earth's surface is water, and only 1% of this is suitable for drinking? Our next science unit will focus on the Earth's Systems. During this unit, students will gain an understanding how the Earth's four systems interact. In addition, they will learn how the water cycle works by creating models of groundwater, pie charts of water distribution, and designing water cycle posters.
