2. For college, I attended the University of Delaware. Before that, I attended Wedgwood, Chestnut Ridge, and WTHS right here in town.
3. Before coming to Bunker Hill, I taught at William Penn High School in Delaware and then Woodstown Middle School. This is my first year at Bunker Hill!
4. I had a fantastic teacher in High School, Ms. Mason, who helped me grow my love and curiosity for social studies. She inspired me to become a teacher.
5. When I am not teaching, I love to travel and go hiking.
Divergent Book Review by Delaney Schwartz
Time is something we have a lot more of on our hands due to Coronavirus; however, it is still important to keep busy during these times! While physical activity is something that is extremely important to exercise the body, we must also exercise the mind! A really great way to do this is by reading! Reading has numerous benefits for the brain, as well as being extremely calming and de-stressing. A great series that I highly recommend reading is Divergent. This book is an action-packed, drama! It is filled with twists and turns and is definitely a page-turner. This book is basically about 4 factions, with the whole population divided up amongst these 4 factions. All the factions each value certain qualities, and the people that belong to the faction must follow these rules, based on what their faction values. The author of this book does a great job of conveying the emotions of the characters to you, putting you on a rollercoaster of emotion with them. When I was reading this book, reality escaped me and I found myself among these characters, facing the trials and tribulations that these characters also faced. I would highly recommend reading this book series it is a wonderful read!
Patriotism by Delaney Schwartz - winner of The Patriot's Pen Essay Contest
“Oh-oh, say can you see...” resonates throughout the ice hockey arena as I look to see thousands of Americans with their hands over their hearts, stand with pride and love for the beautiful country we share. As I look upon the red, white, and blue emblem swaying gently amid the glowing crowd, a sense of profound unity, respect, and love fills me with warmth. Despite being amongst strangers I have never felt so at home. This is what patriotism means to me.
Patriotism is so much more than a song, a poem, or a word. Rather it is a feeling, an action, and a thought. Patriotism is the feeling that engulfs you when listening to the national anthem. The act of helping your country and your fellow countrymen is one of being patriotic. The thought of respect and love for America is what makes you a patriot.
Patriotism unifies the people of America. As in 9/11 when the twin towers fell, most people helped in any way that they could. Whether it be to rescue people trapped inside the burning buildings, treat those who were injured, or to honor the lives who were lost. Being patriotic means believing in the promise of America... America’s promise for its citizens to be free to pursue happiness and enjoy liberty. Being patriotic means believing in American ideals enough to put one’s life on the line to protect them, as every soldier does who fulfills his or her duty so far from home and loved ones. Patriotism is in police officers and firefighters who protect the citizens. It is in the teachers who teach the next generation how to keep moving forward. Patriotism is in the simple yet poignant act of wanting to make our country a better place. All patriotic acts allow us to be who we are and accomplish what we wish to be.
Patriotism is what strengthens and unifies this great nation. It gives us the determination to unselfishly act in the best interest of our country. Being an American is something I can celebrate. I can wave a flag and watch as the sky is illuminated with a brilliant show to commemorate the birth of the beautiful United States of America.
I am an American and I would wish for nothing other. This is what Patriotism means to me.
