News From the Nurse
McGown Elementary: Campus/ Parent/ Guardian
From: Department of Health Services
As the end of the school year approaches, we would like to remind you to pick up any medications you provided to the school clinic this year. According to CFISD Board Policy FFAC (local), medications must be retrieved from the clinic by a parent/guardian or designated responsible adult. Please plan to pick up your students medications by Thursday May 25, 2023 and no later than 12pm. Medications not collected by 12pm on May 25, 2023 will be disposed of according to CFISD policy.
*Remember to have Emergency Medication Action Plans completed by your students physician over the summer break for the 2023-2024 school year. You can find forms by using the link
https://www.cfisd.net/Page/1922 *
Nurse Palmer will be collecting new medications, including over-the-counter medications, for the 2023-2024 school year at Meet the Teacher or during the first week of school. All medication will need to be in its original, new, unopened container. It also must be age-appropriate, unexpired, and brought into clinic by parent or designated guardian. Students cannot bring any medication to school (including cough drops).
Thank you and have a great summer!

Amazing Owls
We are so proud of all of our owls for donating and representing at the Superintendents Fun Run this year! The event had record donations and raised $210,000 for scholarships through the Cy Fair Educational Foundation. Our Owlettes had an amazing show before the races, and we also had three students place in the 5k run for their age groups! Congratulations to Broox B. (3rd Place), Ollie S. (3rd Place) and Jacob V. (1st Place). Way to go!
Second grade was very busy! Students WOWed parents with their "It's A Hit" musical and the Eggscape Room event. Kindergartners showed off what they know with our first ever Literacy Luau. All kindergarten- second grade students learned about writing and illustrating with author Ross Burach. All of our Horizons' students were invited to showcase their passion projects to their parents at the McGown GT showcase.
May is here and we can't wait to see all of the awesome things our owls will do! It is so fun to see our owls in action.

Library
All library books were due May 5. Please return any remaining books as soon as possible. Missing book fines will be added to SchoolCash on May 19th after inventory is complete. You will get an email notification if a fine is added to your student's account. Thank you so much for helping us gather and account for all of our McGown library books as we close out our very first year.
Library Orientation
In order to volunteer in the library, you must attend an orientation each school year. I will be providing an orientation the week before school begins for the fall semester. The date will be coming soon, so that you can plan ahead. I would love to have you!
Year Recap and Thank You
Thank you so very much to everyone who supported our library this school year. Whether it was through time and energy, creativity, purchases at our book fair, or donations to our Read-A-Thon, you helped make our first year spectacular. Both Read-A-Thon and our Book Fair were hugely successful due to our community support through volunteering and contributions. Both helped fund activities and supplies throughout the year to engage our owls. We were able to invite four rockstar authors and illustrators, performer Mother Goose, and multiple local CFISD celebrities into our library to read, motivate, and teach our students.
In the fall, character pumpkins overtook our library shelves as families worked together to create masterpieces for all to enjoy. In December, our families created and donated ornaments to commemorate our inaugural year. Throughout the fall and spring, our third grades participated in the citywide reading competition, Read to the Final Four, and read their way to the Sweet 16 out of 400 participating Houston schools. Our students checked out over 34,000 copies from our library this school year as their enthusiasm for reading flourished. In addition, our Makerspace hit the ground running with eager volunteers. Students were able to show their genius using their creativity as they built and explored different materials and tasks throughout the school year. Name That Book Club began in October with 142 students eager to join. These 3rd -5th graders worked to read and recognize 100 books as they competed to represent McGown at the District Level Competition. In the end, our 5th grade team of six prevailed and shined at our District Competition in March. Finally, in April, our students submitted bookmarks for the chance to have it printed and distributed during check out. I was amazed at the entries and creativity! Our 5th grade Name That Book team selected the top 3 from each grade level and then the McGown admin team selected winners anonymously. Below are the winners for each grade level.

Counselors' Corner
Career Week
We are so excited for our first Career Week, May 8th -12th. Each grade level will get to explore careers through interactive activities during the week. On Friday, May 12th, we will be hosting presenters for third, fourth, and fifth grades. Presenters will spend the school day teaching students all about their careers. We are in need of help with our McGown Cafe (hospitality room), so that our presenters can enjoy treats between classes. If you can help by donating snacks for our presenters, we would greatly appreciate it.

April Counselor Lesson
Counselors provide monthly lessons in student classrooms each month. For the month of April, we discussed self-talk, which is the message that we send to ourselves. Through class discussion, we also learned that self-talk can be either positive or negative. When we use negative self-talk we tell ourselves things that are not true and unkind. When we use positive self-talk, we encourage ourselves and feel capable of doing difficult things.
Bringing Out the Best
For the month of April, our CFISD students learned about the character trait of perseverance. During the month of May, students will learn about the character trait of respect. Respect is a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important and should be treated in an appropriate way. At home, you can discuss how you feel when you are respected. What can members of your family do to be respectful of one another? How can we be respectful of people in our community? How about people we don't know?
Family & Community Engagement
According to the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs, school counselors are expected to provide school-wide professional development and parent workshops throughout the school year. The CFISD Counseling Department provides a number of parent workshop opportunities such as internet safety, drug awareness, College Night, and the Mental Health Resource Fair. At McGown we, too, want to ensure that we are getting parent input on our counseling program. Please complete the short survey to help us best meet the needs of our students and their families.
