The Siegrist Star
Week of December 12, 2022
Powering Up with Holiday Cheer!!
It has been a great week at Siegrist. And like most weeks we have had a lot to celebrate. This week 1st grade celebrated the season by exploring the Polar Express. This included many opportunities to engage in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities. It was definitely a fun time kicked off with a pajama day and ending with some hot chocolate.
Students recognized for demonstrating leadership from the 7 Habits were honored with an ice cream social. Thank you Nodaway Valley Bank for celebrating student leadership at Siegrist and sponsoring the ice cream social for all students receiving the leadership award.
Today, was kicked off with HIGH-FIVE FRIDAY at Siegrist THIS MORNING! Students were greeted with high fives by many high school students, including April Bobowski and Charlotte Hammond who later talked with a few classes about their character trait and what it means to them during the classroom morning meetings.
Today Pat and Diana Cockrill, community members and parents of three PCR-3 graduates, awarded one of 4 $250 Memorial classroom grants to Mrs. Malinda Jefferies. The grant program was set up to honor their daughter, Abby Cockrill, a 2006 graduate of PCHS, who was studying to become a teacher and student teaching in the District when her life was taken by a drunk driver. The memorial’s purpose is to help PCR-3 educators fund special projects within their classroom or school. Mrs. Jefferies was surprised by receiving the grant and is using the funds to support the giraffe community in her classroom.
Siegrist is such an amazing and special community because of our students, staff and families. Thank you for your support and partnership. Have a wonderful weekend and we will see you on Monday :)
All the best,
Mrs. Johna-Kaye Sutton

Notes from Your School Nurse
Accidents happen, so please send a change of clothes with your student in their backpack. We do have some spare clothes in the health room, but sizes are limited, and we may not have something to fit the student. If that happens, we have to call the parents and have them bring in a fresh change of clothes.
(If you happen to have some stretchy pants that your student has outgrown, we will happily take them off your hands and add them to our closet!)
In true Midwest fashion, the weather is going from warm, to cold, to unbearable, and back to warm all in the same day. Dressing in layers work so kiddos can shed the heavy sweaters when they get too warm. Don’t forget to send a warm coat, hat, and mittens/gloves for recess.
Even in the winter, people can still be dehydrated. Don’t forget to send your student with a water bottle so they can have easy access to water. Water is life!
Flu season has been upon us for about a month now, and doesn’t seem to be letting up. If your student is running a fever, do not send them to school. If they have a fever, do not medicate with a fever-reducer and send them to school. Medications will only mask a fever, and that fever can return once the med wears off. Please do not sent your student to school until they are been 24 hours fever free.
If a child experiences vomiting within 24 hours prior to school, they should not come to school. Keep them home, and hydrated. The same applies to severe diarrhea.
Also, a reminder to parents that the health room cannot give out cough drops or throat lozenges unless a parent furnishes them. Same goes for Tylenol, Motrin, or any other over-the-counter medication.
As always, my door is always open if you have any questions. Feel free to stop by. I also answer emails and phone calls as well.

Help Your Child Succeed In School
Did you know?
Siegrist has an attendance committee, made up of school administrators, a school counselor, the school social worker and an administrative assistant. We review student attendance data that falls below 90% each month. It is important that parents know if their child(ren)’s attendance falls below 90%. School personnel work with the student and family to help improve school attendance.
Your call in when your student is away from the building is very important and we thank you for this. Please continue to call in (816-858-5977) any time your child will be absent from school. Calling outside normal office hours, no problem! Leave a message indicating the student’s name, grade, teacher and reason for absence.
Our November, 2022 average student attendance rate fell, however we have seen much sickness. Your child’s health and wellness is important to us. Please see the health room reminders in this newsletter.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Continue to ask your child questions about his/her learning.
Spend time with your child(ren) and know that what you say and do matters greatly to your child.
Help your child to be ready for school each morning by setting up routines that allow them to have a positive start to the day.
