Central Tiger Tales
A Leader in Me School - April 2021
A Message From Your Principal
Dear Central Families,
During the week of May 3rd, please join me in celebrating our wonderful staff of teachers at Central Elementary during National Teacher Appreciation Week! Our students have had a tremendous year of new growth and learning and we have our Central instructional team to thank for that positive academic progress. The unique challenges of the COVID pandemic and the minor inconveniences of masks and social distancing did not prevent our team of teachers from giving their all to our Tiger Cubs throughout this school year.
Each spring at Lebanon Community Schools, it is tradition that we select a Distinguished Educator from each school building. This year we celebrate and congratulate Mrs. Kacy Anderson, first grade teacher, selected by our team as Distinguished Educator for 2020-21. Mrs. Anderson is a passionate educator with a proactive spirit and drive to become the best teacher she can be.
It is with great pride that we celebrate our Central teachers this week! I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher and share a word of thanks and appreciation for their dedication to your Central Elementary students this year.
Yours in education,
Rebecca Outcalt
Central Elementary Named a Leader in Me Lighthouse School
by FranklinCovey Education
Central Elementary announced this spring that the school has been certified and named as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School by FranklinCovey Education. This recognition is evidence that the school has produced outstanding results in school and student outcomes, by implementing the Leader in Me process with fidelity and excellence. The certification also is in recognition of the extraordinary impact the school is having on staff, students, parents, and the greater community. Central Elementary is now the 5th school in our home state of Indiana to achieve Lighthouse status of over 65 Leader in Me schools statewide. There are approximately 5,000 Leader in Me schools internationally and only 595 Lighthouse schools worldwide.
Rebecca Outcalt, principal of Central Elementary said, “Our Central team is honored to be named a Leader in Me Lighthouse School. We have seen amazing results since implementing the Leader in Me process at our school in 2017. The entire Central Staff has worked collaboratively, synergizing our efforts in creating an amazing school culture that empowers our students to lead their own learning by setting goals to reach their potential. Our Central staff and students have grown in their leadership abilities, and the impact of their hard work is now visible in the positive supportive culture that we have built together. Our mission is to encourage the development of the whole child and build confident learners and leaders of our Lebanon community.”
Sean Covey, President, FranklinCovey Education, said, “We are thrilled to recognize Central Elementary as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School. Schools who achieve this Lighthouse Certification are great examples of a strong leadership model and process, and of what it means to be a Leader in Me school. This school has experienced transformational results by implementing the principles and practices related to Leader in Me. We are so pleased and honored to be their partner and to celebrate the success they are experiencing.”
The Leader in Me framework empowers students with the social emotional, leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. The Central Elementary staff have focused their instructional efforts to enhance student critical thinking, creativity, self-discipline, vision, initiative, communication, relationship building, goal achievement, public speaking, community awareness, social-emotional learning, teamwork, listening skills, time management, leading projects, self-directed learning, and problem-solving.
Lighthouse Certification is a highly-regarded standard set by FranklinCovey Education that is attainable by every Leader in Me school and occurs as a result of implementing Leader in Me with fidelity. The Leader in Me process supports student social emotional and has been endorsed by the Collaborative for Academic, Social Emotional Learning (CASEL) as a “CASEL SELect” program. This designation is given to effective Social-Emotional Learning Programs which have met CASEL’s high-quality and evidence-based standards.
Those schools that have achieved the prestigious Lighthouse Certification by FranklinCovey Education demonstrate the following:
- The principal, school administration and staff engage in ongoing learning and develop as leaders, while championing leadership for the school.
- Leadership principles are effectively taught to all students through direct lessons, integrated approaches, and staff modeling. Students are able to think critically about and apply leadership principles.
- Families and the school partner together in learning about the 7 Habits and leadership principles through effective communication and mutual respect.
- The school community is able to see leadership in the physical environment, hear leadership through a common language, and feel leadership through a culture of caring, relationships, and affirmation.
- Leadership is shared with students through a variety of leadership roles and student voice leads to innovations within the school.
- Schoolwide, classroom, family and community leadership events provide authentic environments to celebrate leadership, build culture, and allow students to practice leadership skills.
- The school utilizes the 4DX® process to identify and track progress toward Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) for the school, classroom, and staff.
- Students lead their own learning with the skills to assess their needs, set appropriate goals, and carry out action plans. They track progress toward goals in Leadership Notebooks and share these notebooks with adults in student-led conferences.
- Teacher planning and reflection, trusting relationships, and student-led learning combine to create environments for highly engaged learning.

Central Pride Champion - Lukas Shirley
Nominated by Kim Lahrman, Diana Shirley and Keanna Stamm
It is with great pleasure that we are able to honor Luke Shirley as the Tiger PRIDE Champion at Central Elementary. He shows great leadership inside and outside of the building. Luke is focused when at school. You can often find him prioritizing his tasks, finding happiness for others' success, and ensuring that everyone gets a chance to participate. Luke also finds ways to help others when he isn't at school. Whether he is picking up trash around the block, helping his dad work on cars, or playing with his team on the court, he leads with excellence. Luke radiates Tiger PRIDE.
3rd Grade Kidtown - Different, But Still Awesome!
The third graders participated in Kidtown a little differently this year! They designed and created a product of their choice. They then made a commercial, scavenger hunt, and order form for students in the school to order the product! The students then fulfilled the orders and delivered the product to the students. The students did a fantastic job!
Sunshine Committee
We have some amazing 5th grade leaders in the Sunshine Spreaders Club. Over the last few weeks they worked to create a few spring activities for classes. Students synergized to find 50 hidden eggs around the school. This was a nice brain break for our 3-5 students as they navigate ILEARN testing. The creativity didn’t stop there. The team also created a cryptograph for classes to decode to find a fun spring message. We appreciate the puzzles and the teamwork this encourages.
Running Club
It has been wonderful to have time outside together for Running Club. The kids meet once a week after school and “Hustle Hard” to add up miles. Each group of students encourages each other, sets goals, and works to improve each week. Runners earn shoe charms for miles ran. The students in grades 3-5 are working toward The Big Run that will be on the LMS cross country course later this spring where our runners have the opportunity to race against the other LCSC elementary schools. Because of this competition, grades 3-5 get the opportunity to train at recess once a week too. Two years ago, our girls team won! We miss having our parent volunteers and hope to welcome you back next year. "Hustle Hard" Central Tiger Cubs!
