Whitford Catholic Primary School
Newsletter 2 - 12 February 2020
Message from the Principal
This morning we celebrated with Mass, the opening of the 2020 school year. Coming together as a community is always special and today was another reminder of just how blessed we are to live in and have the many opportunities to learn and grow in such a beautiful part of the world.
In saying this, it is important to keep in our prayers those people who have had a tumultuous start to the year, whether it be related to the recent bushfires, floods, coronavirus or that of illness, family loss or family difficulty. We pray especially for those within our community who are suffering and may we embrace them with love, kindness and a gentle heart.
Year Six School Leaders and School Captains
Congratulations to our student leaders, faction captains, dance captains and ministry teams. May each of these students wear their badges with pride as they take on the responsibility of helping others within the school.
Safer Internet Day 2020
Like many other countries around the world, Australia continues to work on how to best safeguard people from online harm, and to promote safer, more positive online experiences for both children and adults. Realistically we know that we can’t be with our children every minute of the day, but what we can do, is give them the clearest messages about online safety.
Support provided by the eSafety Commissioner is excellent, with their safety.gov.au/parents website providing education, advice and information on online safety for parents, young people, children and even seniors. I recommend families avail themselves of this important resource. Please check out the Parent Information below-
Dads and Kids Campout
We wish all those families involved in the Whity Dads and Kids Campout at Ern Halliday Camp this weekend loads of fun and a good night’s sleep! We look forward to hearing all about your adventures. Good luck!
Afterschool Clubs and Instrumental Lessons
We can see that school’s back in full swing with the commencement of afterschool Art Clubs, Young Engineers, Chess and Keyed Up Music. These are awesome opportunities for the children and if you require any information, please check further in the newsletter or contact the front office.
WCPS Parents Sundowner
I encourage all WCPS parents and guardians to attend the Sundowner taking place on Wednesday 26 February. This is a fantastic opportunity for staff and parents to gather as a community in a casual setting. Please RSVP through School Stream by Monday 24 February and please note that, as alcohol is being served at this event, children are not permitted to attend. I look forward to meeting as many parents and guardians as possible on the night.
Many Blessings
Tamara McGougan
Principal
Please note that the red brick paving outside the front office is not for parking on. This is a walkway for our students and parents and is a matter of safety.

Seasons for Growth
Here at Whitford Catholic Primary School we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce or significant change or loss, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. Therefore, we offer a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth to students in Years 1-6.

Dance and Drama
PP-Yr 2 Drama
In Term I will be teaching the students Drama and Term 2 will be Dance. The students have all begun their classes where the focus has been on speech annunciation, movement, space, non-verbal communication, improvisation, character/role and of course FUN! In Pre-Primary our focus is Circus, Year One is Dreamtime stories as well as puppetry and in Year Two we will be looking at Fractured Fairytales.
Boys Dance (Year 4, 5, 6) and Specialist Dance (Year 5, 6)
It all begins this week with rehearsals and sign up! If your child has signed up for either group, make sure you are following the groups on SchoolStream as that is our main form of communication. It is important that both the parent and student understand the commitment involved for the year. A parent information night will be held on Tuesday 3 March at 5:30pm in the Library. We are all looking forward to another successful year!!
Christian Dance Auditions (Year 4, 5, 6)
This year I have opened up Christian Dance for Year 4, 5, 6 students who currently attend ballet/contemporary/lyrical classes outside of school. This is due to the criteria required for Catholic Performing Arts. Auditions will be held in the Music Room at 8:00am next Thursday 20 February.

Environment and Sustainability
The E&S Committee is excited to be implementing a range of projects as we work toward becoming a Waste Wise School. We encourage everyone in our school community to show support for these projects. A great way to start showing support is to be mindful of the type and volume of waste that is generated from the lunch box items that your child brings to school. Awareness around the volume of waste will be highlighted through the commencement of ‘bin free’ days.
Please consider if there are easy swaps you can make for any packaged items you are currently sending in. The Crunch&Sip website offers some great suggestions to get you started. Click on the circles icons found in the link to see a wide range of alternatives to packaged foods - https://www.crunchandsip.com.au/healthy-lunchboxes.
If parents would like more information about the E&S Committee or have further questions, please join us at our next E & S Meeting which will take place Monday 17 February at 8am in Mrs Hopkins Year 4W classroom. All are welcome to join the journey of building a waste wise school. Hope to see you there.
School Banking
Welcome back to school and Term 1. Hope you all enjoyed the summer break. School banking is every Tuesday, please deposit your books in the dog outside the school office. Wishing you all a wonderful year, many thanks from the school banking team.
P & F News
Stage 2 of the nature playground, the treehouses and bridges, is almost complete. We can't wait for the students to have fun on it!
Don't forget to save the date for our first P&F Meeting of the year which will take place Wednesday 19 February at 7:30pm in the staff room. Please join us to meet your representatives and see what we have planned for this year. Any agenda items you would like discussed at the meeting can be emailed to pandf@wcps.wa.edu.au. OLM Parish News
We are after volunteers for our Children’s liturgy which runs during term time, Sundays, at the 9.30am masses. It is an opportunity for children to experience the gospel in a child friendly way. The children are engaged in singing, prayer, craft and other fun activities. The sessions usually go for approximately 20 minutes. We are looking for both teachers and general helpers. Training is offered for all parents/guardians wishing to get involved and the parish will help adults obtain a working with children check.
Please consider getting involved with the parish in this way, we have a lovely team and the children are great fun to work with.
