Warrior Weekly News
A Weekly Newsletter for Warrior Families and Students
February 16, 2024
Greetings Warrior Families and Friends,
What a week! Seriously, there are so many amazing things happening with our Warriors. To begin with, HUGE shout out to Kierstin Schlevensky on being named as a finalist for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship. To earn this recognition Kierstin had to be one of the highest scoring students on the PSAT in the nation. Additionally, her academic record and an essay she wrote were key factors. Good luck to Kierstin as the competition continues!
Additionally, if you didn’t see our Warriors musical production of Chicago yet, you need to! Opening night was incredible and continues to receive rave reviews. The cast and crew have been working so hard and I promise you will be in awe of the performance. There are still seats available for the shows tonight and Saturday at 7:00 and the 2:00 matinee on Sunday. Tickets can be purchased online HERE.
In other exciting action, for the third straight year, our boys wrestling team won their WIAA Sectional meet and qualified to compete in the WIAA Team State Championship Tournament. They will battle again this weekend to earn the opportunity for individuals to compete at the state tournament as well. Our girls gymnastics team won the Classic 8 Conference Championship. Our boys swim team, led by Carter Jewell who just set two new school records, will have five athletes competing this weekend at the WIAA Swimming State Championship. Additionally, this weekend our ski teams will have two girls and six boys competing for the state championship this weekend in LaCrosse. Good luck Warriors!
It is truly inspiring to watch our students work so diligently to grow their skills to shine in so many different environments. If you haven’t been to an event here lately, I strongly encourage you to do so. I believe you will leave feeling proud of our students and the multiple ways they demonstrate what it means to be a Warrior. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in the incredible journey through the high school years.
Have an awesome weekend, and GO WARRIORS!

Continuing the Conversation
I was recently asked why I continue to bring up the topic of vaping. The answer is very simple, far too many parents and students are still naive to the serious health risks associated with it. The reality is, vaping nicotine is incredibly addictive and harmful to the developing brains of teenagers. Personally, I have seen far too many young adults experience serious health implications and we need to do all that we can to reduce the use of it. Data continues to show this problem is not going away and unfortunately, exposure to vaping continues to happen at earlier ages. There is no guaranteed way to ensure your student will make healthy decisions and teens are known for their risk taking behavior. However, research does support that teens whose families continue to talk about risk taking behaviors and where you stand with it, are far less likely to engage in this behavior. Please, talk with your students about vaping and alcohol use. If you are looking for some suggestions, check out this tip sheet for starting a conversation with your teen about e-cigarettes. Additionally, feel free to reach out to any member of our student services or administrative teams for support. Please, keep the conversation going and let’s keep our students safe.

A Message from Mr. Andy Bavlnka
Dear Warrior Families,
I am incredibly honored and humbled to serve as the next principal of Muskego High School, beginning on July 1st. Stepping into this role fills me with immense pride and excitement, knowing the incredible potential within these walls, both in our students and our dedicated staff.
My passion lies in igniting the spark of curiosity in each student, fostering a love for learning, and providing them with the tools and opportunities to grow into well-rounded individuals. A great education goes beyond an amazing curriculum; it's about preparing our students for success in whatever path they choose; we want our students to be college, career, and community ready.
I look forward to the opportunity to meet with our students and families to build a strong home to school partnership. One of my core beliefs about education is that it is important to connect students to school with engaging classrooms, phenomenal co-curricular opportunities, and through the relationships we build as a staff with our students.
The students are doing amazing things at MHS and I look forward to the important work of continuing to find new ways for all of our students to grow and shine.
Please reach out if you have any questions or are interested in sparking a conversation.
Go, Warriors!
Andrew Bavlnka

FIRST Advocacy Day at the State Capitol
On Tuesday February 6, we had 6 team members and 2 mentors attend FIRST Wisconsin Advocacy Day. The students spoke with our state representatives and senators to garner more support for STEM. Currently, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction provides $750k of matching funding per year for teams with students in grades 5-12 with a maximum per team of $6k. This season teams requested $992,000 of funding, so we’re excited for the work cut out for us during the 2025 budget cycle.
Impact
Programming
This week, we continued tuning all of our values for the robot subsystems. We have been able to fully tune our transition arm and intake subsystems. We have started tuning the swerve drivetrain, transition, and climber subsystems. Due to mechanical issues we have not been able to complete much testing with the shooter. Tuning a subsystem includes determining static, velocity, and/or gravity feedforward values in voltage units, and then determining a proportional controller value for either position or velocity control. We have been able to control all of our subsystems and should be able to use them all at the Sussex Scrimmage on Sunday. This tuning will continue as the mechanical team continues to improve the robot.Electrical
Last week we began wiring our robot, and through lots of time and effort, also finished wiring our robot. We tried to make our wiring more organized compared to last year and it is simpler since we don’t have an extendable arm this year.
Mechanical
This week, the mechanical team has continued to tweak and improve upon our robot to get better performance in the field. This involves changing our drivetrain to all Kraken motors instead of the Falcon motors that were used the past two years. This should help our performance on the field, which is very important especially during auto. They have also been redesigning the shooter subsystem as we had some issues with our drive chains causing too much fraction. The plan is to have the shooter back on the robot and shooting by Sussex.

EDUCATORS RISING
Our very own Muskego High School Educators Rising Chapter is running a book drive! In case you don’t know what Educators Rising is, it is a nationally recognized club that is for students exploring the field of education. The chapter here in Muskego leads a teacher appreciation breakfast, classroom shadowing experiences, and also competes at a State Summit in March in many different education related topics. We even had two national competitors last year!
As part of the State Summit, our club is participating in the book drive service project. You can help us by looking around your house for any gently used early childhood to middle school age books. We also accept newly purchased books.
The drive will take place from February 12th-March 1st.
This is for students and staff.
Bring book donations to the MHS Library.
We are excited to bring these books with us to the State Summit on March 6th.
Thank you for your support, MHS Educators Rising 😊
Our Educators Rising Crew celebrated National Educators Rising Week showing their excitement for the field of education with their new gear and some time to share their appreciation for a few of their MHS teachers. “There’s Power in Teaching” and we can’t wait to see the amazing things these future educators do to impact students.

MHS Student Parking
Dear Warrior Families,
We have reached the point in the school year where we have sold and fulfilled the number of parking passes for students that equals the number of student parking spots we have on the high school campus. We know that it is an exciting time in a teenagers life when they get their driver's license and want to continue to provide parking for new drivers moving forward. At this time if a student were to need to purchase a parking pass, it would be for our "satellite" parking lot by the soccer field. There will be a satellite lot specific parking pass issued to the student at a reduced rate of $20, students would need to register their vehicles just as in any other case. These parking passes can be picked up in the Athletic/Activities Office and paid for through Infinite Campus.
Just as a reminder, any vehicle on campus without the appropriate parking pass may be ticketed by the City of Muskego Police Department.
