Update For Intermediate Families From Principal Gene Hoskins
January Update - iReady Diagnostics and Midyear Benchmark Assessments
I hope you have been able to enjoy a great weekend! We have another busy week in store for our Intermediate Spartans - here are some highlights for this coming week:
Midyear Benchmark Assessments Update: Last week students did an outstanding job on their midyear math iReady diagnostic. I was so pleased with the effort our students showed in taking their iReady math assessment - with few exceptions, both in-person and virtual students took their time and put their best effort into their diagnostic. Teachers, students, and parents will be able to use this data to determine each student's progress on goals for growth in math that has been made this fall.
This week we continue midyear iReady diagnostic assessments, but this week it will be for growth in reading. All students will begin their reading diagnostic through iReady at 7:45 AM on Monday, January 11. AS with the math diagnostic this past week, students will not work on the diagnostic for more than 45 minutes each day, and will have plenty of time over multiple days to complete the diagnostic. Teachers will be monitoring student progress on the diagnostic and let students know if they are going too quickly through the assessment.
Later in January students will take a writing assessment for ELA and an extended-response assessment in math where students will show their work. We will be mailing all parents a report for your child's performance on these midyear benchmark assessments in early February. It is important that all students do their best on these assessments so that teachers have a better understanding of each students individual areas off strength and what concepts or skills that they need more support in.
COVID Protocols - Reminders: We have been very fortunate at Sodus that we have have been able to remain open for in-person learning throughout the year. WE have ben successful in this as a school community because of the thoughtful daily procedures that we have in place and the willingness of students and staff members to follow our procedures and protocols with fidelity. Thank you for your partnership in working with your child to help maintain these protocols! As you know, positive cases are in the rise in our area, so here are a few reminders that we need to be vigilant about:
- Students wear a mask at all times on the bus and in the building. If anyone forgets a mask, there are extras on buses and in the entrance ways to the Intermediate.
- Students and staff members use hand sanitizer when entering the building. It is also available throughout the school day.
- Masks need to be worn over both the nose and the mouth at all times, with the exception of mask breaks at the direction of the teacher.
- During lunch, students and staff members should be wearing a mask when not actually eating.
- Students should maintain social distancing (6 feet of separation) while in the classroom and in hallways.
- No more than two students should be using the bathroom at any time.
- Parents monitor check temperatures daily, and monitor for COVID symptoms - students should be kept home if they have a fever or any COVID symptoms.
- When traveling to a state not neighboring NYS, you must have a negative COVID test before returning to NYS, quarantine at home for 4 days upon returning, and get another negative on day 4 in order to return to in-person learning.
If you have any questions about whether your child needs to quarantine due to symptoms or travel, please contact our school nurse Julie Riviello, R.N. Thank you for your partnership in helping to prevent the spread of the virus so that we are able to keep Sodus Intermediate open for in-person learning!

Learning About Matisse - See Picture Above!
Students in 4th grade art learned about the French artist Henri Matisse and his large paper cut-outs. They also learned about the difference between organic and geometric shapes. Students were given colorful sheets of paper and directed to cut out their own organic and geometric shapes. They then worked together as a class to combine their shapes into one large collage. Every class was given the same materials and instructions, yet each collage is as unique as the students who made them! ~ Mrs. Marcotte, Intermediate Art Teacher
