Iredell Crosby Scholars Newsletter
Fall 2016
We Reached 2203!
The 2016-17 year is the second year of the program in Iredell County, and we are pleased to share that we have a total of 2203 Crosby Scholars across the county! We're excited to have more than 900 returning Crosby Scholars and more than 1200 brand new students.
Open House and Information Night
The feedback from the event was very positive, especially from the organizations that attended to advertise their volunteer opportunities. In the non-profit world, volunteers are the heart to keeping an organization going. Our Crosby Scholars were able to connect with a variety of organizations and find a volunteer opportunity of interest to them.
The following organizations were represented:
- G4G Ministries
- Hope of Mooresville
- Iredell County Animal Services and Control
- Iredell County Museum
- Iredell Partnership for Young Children
- Iredell County Public Library
- Mooresville Christian Mission
- Musical Minds
- Operation Christmas Child
- Rescue Ranch
- Troutman Library
- Yokefellow Ministry
Crosby Academies
Eggs, marshmallows, beach balls...
The purpose of the academies is to help students gain the skills and instruction on topics they may not normally receive throughout a regular school day. We focus on topics that are appropriate for each grade level and try to keep the activities as fun as possible. For example, for the 9th/10th grade academy session for Perseverance or "Sticking to It", students get to do a fun, interactive activity involving a marshmallow toss.
Community service
Two Crosby Scholars helped out with the Oct. 7, 9th/10th and 11th grade academies.

The deadline for juniors to submit their community service form is January 31, 2017. For all other grades, the deadline is March 31, 2017.
If you have questions about what can count as community service, please don't hesitate to ask us! Or, if you're struggling to find a community service activity, please check the portal because we frequently post opportunities. You may also call or email us if you need help with finding an activity.
Do you have photos to share of your community service activity? If so, please send them to us and we'd be glad to share them!
Senior Advisors
Help wanted!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We are seeking responsible adults that are willing and have the time to handle a caseload of junior Crosby Scholars and are willing to work with them all the way through high school graduation. Caseloads may consist of anywhere from 1 to 30 junior Crosby Scholars, and a stipend will be available for caseloads of 4 or more.
Advisors will keep up with and submit conference notes on a timely basis through the Crosby portal, which will then be available for review by Crosby staff. We will provide the training for the senior advisors. Parents who want to be their child's senior advisor are encouraged to do so and will also attend advisor training.
If you are interested in becoming a senior advisor, please email Suzanne Wegmiller (Executive Director) at swegmiller@crosbyscholarsiredell.org, or Jill Hypes (Program Director) at jhypes@crosbyscholarsiredell.org. You may also call 704-873-5005 x.1408 (Suzanne) or x.1407 (Jill).
Please indicate your interest by Friday, November 18, 2016.
