Scoring 1883 vs Today
The objective of the game is to score more points than the opponent. Points are awarded for a variety of plays, but the point system has changed since 1883.
For example, a touchdown in 1883 was worth only 2 points compare to the 6 points a team is awarded in the modern day game. Once a touchdown is scored, a PAT Kick is attempted and it is now only worth 1 point as opposed to the 4 points teams were awarded in 1883.
Another way for a team to score point is by kicking a Field Goal through upright goal posts. In 1883, a team was awarded 5 points, however, in modern day times, a team is only awarded 3 points. Finally, a Safety is a way for a defense to score on a teams offense. In 1883, a Safety resulted in 1 point but now a Safety is worth 2 points.
Regardless of how a team can score points, the objective is still the same. Score more than the opponent!
