Hallinan Elementary

Principal's Message

Dear Hallinan Families,

As this month zooms by, we continue to practice our monthly character trait RESPONSIBILITY. Mrs Landau is reading some amazing books which reinforce the importance of taking action and understanding how our choices affect others, ourselves and the world. A few of her top choices are Even Superheroes Make Mistakes by Shelly Becker, The Good Egg by Jory John, What If Everybody Did That by Ellen Javernick, I Promise by Lebron James and The Paperboy by Dav Pilkey.

And, some of our 5th Graders are learning responsibility by working the Student Store - they arrive early, open up the store, create displays to showcase small trinkets, assist younger students and make change - yes with real cash! Proceeds from the Student Store will go toward funding the 5th Grade Celebration. Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who are helping teach responsibility to our students!

Looks like we might see the sun this weekend!

Family STEAM Night 4/28

Hallinan is excited to announce the Family STEAM Night taking place on Thursday April 28 from 5:30 to 7 pm. Families are welcome and encouraged to attend this fun event that will foster creativity and love of learning for all. As you journey through classrooms and spaces at Hallinan you will discover science, technology, engineering, art and math activities designed to engage and inspire students and their families. We're so happy for an opportunity to open our doors and have a community building evening. Please make sure all students are accompanied by a guardian.

Art with Buddies!

Mrs Arnold's class did a 3-d art project with their 5th grade buddies in Mrs. Larson’s class! Lots of creativity here! Buddy classes create a great opportunity for our older students to demonstrate responsibility as they support and befriend younger students.

Volunteer Requirements

We're so excited to have volunteers back in the building! Please verify that you have completed the following requirements before volunteering in schools:

  • Complete Background Check through school Raptor system - if you have not already completed this, bring your driver's license or passport with you on your first day volunteering and we'll get you registered in the office.

  • Fill out this form: Sign Statement of Knowledge and Understanding of LOSD Policies - we are happy to provide additional information if you would like it.

  • Show/Send Proof of Vaccination to Lee Gates (gatesl@loswego.k12.or.us). LOSD will not be granting exemptions for volunteers.

COVID-19 Reported Case Update

The LOSD COVID-19 Dashboard is up to date with the number of staff and students who have reported to LOSD testing positive for COVID-19, regardless of school exposure. At Hallinan, we have 1 case reported in the last week. With any potential exposure, people are advised to watch for illness symptoms and follow Oregon Health Authority COVID-19 exclusion procedures. Please contact District Nurses, Ann Nelson at nelsona@loswego.k12.or.us and Nikki Retzlaff at retzlafn@loswego.k12.or.us if your student has tested positive for COVID-19.

COVID-19 Screening: Participant Action Required

LOSD is preparing for the last distribution of COVID-19 Student Screening testing supplies.

Please let us know if your student does not need any more supplies through the last collection day, Wednesday, Jun. 8.

  • If you are interested in un-enrolling your K-12 student in the program, click OPT OUT to complete the OPT OUT form.

  • If you are interested in your student continuing to participate in the program, but do not need any more supplies, click HOLD to complete the HOLD form.

No need to do anything if your student is planning to participate and needs to receive supplies in this last distribution. Thank you!

i-Ready Spring Assessment

Soon, elementary students in Lake Oswego will complete two online i-Ready assessments in class. One is for math and the other is for reading. As you know, i-Ready is a program that helps us determine your child’s strengths and areas for future growth. This is the third of three i-Ready diagnostic assessments we give each year, and the results will be shared with parents before the summer break. For kindergartners, this will be their second i-Ready assessment.

OSAS Schedule and Reminders

Oregon State Assessment will take place in April and May, refer to the Save the Date section above and chart below for details. Teachers will also be sending out information in their newsletters.

Prepare your student for testing by ensuring:

  • They are well rested
  • Have healthy breakfast, lunch and snack options
  • CHARGED chromebook
  • Encouragement - we believe in them!

If a student has a smartphone or watch, these will need to be kept in backpacks during testing as access to them creates an impropriety, per state assessment regulations.

Oregon State Assessment Opt-Out Form

Every year, Oregon students take assessments to meet federal requirements. The purpose of these assessments is to provide data that schools can use to ensure each and every child is on track and achieving learning goals.

State law requires us to inform you that a form is available from the State Department of Education that allows you to opt your child out of the math and English Language Arts assessments for the current school year. Should you wish to opt out your child, fill out the form and submit it to the main office at your child’s school. Please note the submission deadlines listed on the form. Meeting the deadline will help the school with planning and preparation. If you wish your child not to participate in the science assessment for grades 5, 8, and 11, submit this request in writing to the principal of your child's school.

If you have questions or want more information about state assessments, please contact your child’s principal or teacher(s).

2022-23 Registration

Registration for the 2022-23 school year (all grade levels) is open! This is for new students who have never enrolled in Lake Oswego before and for returning students who are not currently enrolled but will re-enroll for next year. Registration is online through ParentVUE. Parents do not need to register students for 2022-23 who are currently attending during the 2021- 22 school year. Information about registration, including Spanish Immersion, can be found here.

Families of students who will be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2022 can find information about Kindergarten, including how to register, on the Hallinan Kinder Counts pre-recorded video on the Hallinan website. The lottery registration deadline is Friday, 4/29. If Hallinan has more age-eligible registered kindergarten students than capacity, the District will conduct a lottery. Additional information can be found here.
