Backpacks
Although backpacks are allowed in school, it has come to our attention that students are carrying what appears to be their entire lives with them. Most kids can safely carry 10% of their body weight. Meaning an 150 lb. person can carry about 15 lbs. safely. This is assuming that they’re distributing the weight properly, lifting with their knees, and wearing an ergonomic bookbag with both straps fitted to their shoulders. You may want to put your student’s bag on the scale to see how much they’re carrying around. As you look at your high schooler with their overstuffed backpack, half-zipped, and slung over one shoulder, you probably realize “proper weight distribution” isn’t on their radar. Most students don’t notice the strain and may not know they’re doing damage to their bodies until they experience back aches and pains. Please have a conversation with your student over this break and discuss the advantages to using a locker during school time. Also students are strongly encouraged to use the lockers during gym class so as to protect any valuables they might bring to school with them.
Daily Symptom Checking
Especially as we experience high rates of transmission across the county and township, families are strongly encouraged to use the Covid Symptom Check Daily. If your child has symptoms, please keep them home from school. We continue to diligently encourage prevention strategies in school with social distancing and masking. We also ask for your support in encouraging your children to remain masked the entire time when riding the buses. Thank you!
