Principal's Corner
Happy New Year Edison families! I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying the New Year and you are well on your way to fulfilling all your resolutions. One of the many wonderful things about the world of education is the new beginnings experienced throughout the school year: the beginning of school, returning from a long break, a new quarter, or a new semester. Each time we have a new beginning, we can start with a clean slate. New beginnings also allow for reflection and evaluation of where we have been and where we want to go.
As we bring an end to the first semester, we have time to reflect on the first half of the school year, what we have accomplished, and reevaluate the goals we have set. Our students continue to make substantial improvements in their achievement and work tirelessly towards their goals. The students established “growth goals” and “stretch goals” for their MAP growth and many of them met those goals. The December MAP scores showed wonderful growth for many of our students. Please ask your student about their “growth goals” and “stretch goals” and encourage them to reach for the stars.
We also want to recognize all the hard work and dedication that parents/guardians have put into their student’s education. We continue to value the relationship between home and school to ensure all students grow and succeed. Please continue to encourage your students down the path of success through regular attendance, a commitment to excellence, and a relentless effort to be a life-long learner. We will once again be conducting student-led conferences this spring on January 30th, February 3rd, and February 6th. Conferences provide your student the opportunity to show you the progress he/she has made in their classes and MAP Assessment. It is also a great time to collaborate with your student’s teachers and strengthen the relationship between home and school to ensure the success of your student.
We look forward to the second semester filled with excitement, learning, and continued growth. We have many things left to accomplish this school year and goals to achieve; however, with the Edison staff, student dedication, and the ongoing support we receive from the parents/guardians and PTO, we can achieve anything.

Binders Needed…
Every year we have students that are unable to purchase binders and try to unsuccessfully organize themselves in other ways. We try to help provide students with binders that cannot afford binders and need one.
We can always use more zipper binders to help our students in being more successful. If you would feel the urge to help some of our less fortunate students out, we would appreciate donations of binders to the Counseling Center. OTHER school supplies are also accepted including pens, pencils, folders, pencil pouches, notebooks, composition books, etc.

Edison's PTO
HAPPY NEW YEAR from the PTO!
2020 is going to be another outstanding year at Edison! We have successfully completed our major fundraising for the school year. We invite you to attend our next meeting on January 15th to discuss how we can continue to improve our school.
We encourage you to join us throughout the year at our monthly meetings. They are a great opportunity to ask questions of our administration, as well as network with other parents to address the needs of Edison. PTO meetings happen at noon on the third Wednesday of every month.
Looking for a great New Year’s resolution? Why don’t you become active in the PTO? It’s a great way to be involved in your student's education, be informed about Edison and the district, and meet other parents. Everyone is welcome and the level of commitment is up to you!
The Edison PTO is looking for a Vice President and a Treasurer. It’s not as much work as you think it is...and it's wonderfully rewarding! Contact us at edisonsiouxfalls@gmail.com to learn more!
As a PTO, we function solely off of donations and fundraising as we have no membership dues. Everyone is a member! Fundraising is optional and donations are welcomed. Both are very, very much appreciated. If you have further questions about our fundraising efforts, read our monthly meeting minutes or contact via email.
Our Big Fundraiser winner and owner of a new ECHO Dot is...

Student Council
The goals of Edison’s Student Council are to build school spirit and pride, to assume responsibility as citizens in our school and community, and to promote a safe, caring environment.
Student Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. Students are actively involved in several projects this fall. Parents, families, and friends are encouraged to participate and become involved in these projects. The current projects are:
Heartland House Christmas – This year we adopted 188 children whose families are part of the Heartland House program. A variety of fund raisers have taken place from bake sales to carnivals. Each child is receiving a gift and a fleece blanket. The 94 mothers of these children also received a fleece blanket. All the gifts were delivered courtesy of Two Men and a Truck. Thank you to everyone for their help and support.
Santa Letters for Make-A-Wish- Make-A-Wish is an agency that grants wishes to seriously ill children. Each year Macy’s donates $2 for each letter written to Santa to Make-A-Wish. Schools across the state participate in a contest to see which school can write the most letters. This year, Edison students wrote 9,000 letters, which means an $18,000 donation to Make-A- Wish. Stay tuned to see if Edison wins the statewide contest! Great work everyone.
Pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Please collect pop tabs and deliver them to room 144. These pop tabs are recycled and help support the Ronald McDonald House, which provides a temporary home for families who have seriously ill children.
Next meeting date: January 14 at 8:15.

8th Grade
Music Notes
Musician of the Month~
Each month the band, orchestra, and chorus areas will each recognize a 6th, 7th, and 8th grader that shows exceptional dedication, responsibility, and character each and every day.
Musicians of the month for December are:
Band: Kyan Carlson (8) Griffin Etrheim (7) Reeghan Osthus (6)
Chorus: Kaylee Frodermann/Lily Ralston-Perreault (8) Annika Kvale/Tessa Blom (7)
Naomi Jespersen/Dalton Lindemann (6)
Orchestra: Kevlyn Kennedy (8) Vanessa Ung (7) Lily Sheets (6)
8th Graders Heading to High School~
The high schools will be bringing some of their vocal and instrumental ensembles to perform for our 8th grade band, chorus and orchestra students in December/January to encourage them to stay involved in these performance groups when they go to high school!
High School Band Auditions~
Students are not required to audition for band classes and marching band at the Sioux Falls public high schools. However, students may choose to audition for an upper level band class instead of the normal Freshman Band. Audition music will be available for LHS in mid-December and for RHS and WHS after Winter Break. Students are encouraged to get help on their music in private lessons or from Mr. Rygg/Mr. Eckart.
Variety Show Performances!~
Plan to attend the Edison Variety Show at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27 or 28, 2020. All seats are $4. Tickets will only be sold at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
There will be a student show on February 28 at 4 p.m. for Edison students and staff. Admission for the student show is $1.
7/8th Bands Recital Night February 25~
This features all 7/8th grade band students performing small group music that we learn in class in January and February. Students will be assigned into groups, but may also play solos or form their own small groups. Each will be assigned a ten-minute time slot to perform and receive a constructive critique. Time slots will be assigned in late January. This is a required performance for all 7th and 8th grade band students. We encourage families and friends to come hear us and join the fun!
Brio Events:
*All Brio students will be given a list of the Brio events for the rest of the year. PLEASE ask your student about it and get the events on your calendar. Thank you!*
Orchestra Contest~
Your student will have the option of performing in a small group contest where they play in front of a judge and get a rating on how well they perform. Contest is not until April 25, however, we will choose music soon to start working on. We will help students choose music during orchestra class.
Private Lessons~
Now is a great time of year to consider starting private lessons on your instrument/voice. Individual lessons with a skilled teacher are a great way to learn, grow, and excel as a musician. The private lesson list can be found on the Edison Music Dept. website at http://emsmusicdept.weebly.com/private-instructors-list.html
Cleaning Your Closets?
The Sioux Falls School District is always on the lookout for donations of gently-used band and orchestra instruments. Given our funding challenges, this is a great way to increase our instrument supply and allow more students to play in band and orchestra. Please contact Mrs. Sip or Mr. Rygg for more information.
Sign Language Interpreter~
Please notify your child’s director if you need a sign language interpreter for the spring concert. Notify the director at least ONE MONTH before the concert date. (Concert dates and director emails are included in this ECHO.)
