Saunders County Livestock Judging
It's that time of year again to be thinking about practice times for the 2018 Livestock Judging Team. Given the great turn out at the judging contest at last year's fair, we are excited to get started! To try to incorporate everyone's busy schedules the best that we can, I have created a survey that lists potential days of the week and times for practices.
Practices will not start until after the holidays and will only be approximately 2 times a month for about 2 hours. This means that there will only be about 8-12 practices total for the season.
If you could please fill out the survey as soon as you can, that would be great. If there is not a date or time that works for you on that list but you are serious about being a member, please email me and we can try to figure something out.
Also, if you know of someone who would like to be a member of the team that is not on this list, feel free to send me their email or forward this message onto them. If you would like to be removed from this list, let me know.
Again, we are excited and looking forward to what this year is going to bring! Livestock judging is a great activity to build and strengthen many life skills and make new friendships with fellow 4-Hers from our county.
Feel free to contact me with any questions!

7th Annual Innovative Youth Corn Challenge
Do you enjoy being outside? Learning new things about crops? Considering a career involving crops, insects, diseases, soils, water or more? Do you want to help figure out how to feed our world’s growing population in a sustainable way?
Nebraska Extension and the Nebraska Corn Board are offering the seventh Innovative Youth Corn Challenge contest. This contest, open to 4-H members (age 10 & older as of Jan. 1st) or FFA members (in-school members), guides participants through all aspects of corn production, as well as agricultural careers related to corn production.
As a team (2 or more participants), youth will be challenged to implement a production practice different than normal to determine if they increased their yield. Economics and sustainability of the practice will also be considered. Yields, cropping history, and production information will be collected in the Corn Yield Challenge management summary.
Cash prizes and plaques are given. First place receives $1,000, second place receives $500, and third place receives $250. Sustainability, crop scouting and “extra mile” awards are also given as cash awards.
To participate in 2018, youth must complete and return an entry form by March 15th to the Fillmore County Extension Office in Geneva, NE. Forms can be downloaded after January 1st at cropwatch.unl.edu/youth/activities. For more information, contact Brandy VanDeWalle at firstname.lastname@example.org.
